At the end of this module you can…

… name the most important elements of the bio-

economy.
… explain the concept of the bio-economy, circular
economy in your own words.
…assign existing (national/regional) procedures or
concepts to the bio-economy based on the content
learned. Picture: meneya;

…analyze relevant industries, such as agriculture,
with regard to their bio-economic potential.

How long does the fossil fuel reserves last?

Nonrenewable resources, such as

minerals and oil, have finite stocks even
though their availability may increase with
discoveries in the short run.

Conversely, renewable resources can be

theoretically produced at a certain level
infinitely.

Resources of Bioeconomy

❖ Bioeconomy
“production of renewable biological
resources and the conversion of these
resources and waste streams into value
added products, such as food, feed, bio-
based products and bioenergy”
(European Commission, 2012)

❖ Natural Resource Management (NRM)

concerns the sustainable utilization of
major natural resources such as land,
water, air, minerals, forests, fisheries,
and wild flora and fauna.
(Castro, Falconer et al. 2000).

European objectives to make the EU more
sustainable in the context of bioeconomy

The initial five objectives of the European Strategy (2012) remain valid, their scope
needs to be adapted and the related actions need to be refocused in order to better
use the potential of the bioeconomy to meet current and future EU priorities.

1. Ensuring food and nutrition security

2. Managing natural resources sustainably – now more important than ever amid
increasing environmental pressures and biodiversity loss
3. Reducing dependence on nonrenewable resources – vital to meeting the EU’s energy
and climate targets, maintaining and strengthening its industrial competitiveness and
achieving a fully deployed circular economy
4. Mitigating and adapting to climate change – the global challenge of this generation
5. Strengthening European competitiveness and creating jobs – a key driver of the
bioeconomy

Bioeconomy is a good approach, but…

…it can have potential negative impacts as:

❖ increased pressure on water bodies and natural ecosystems
❖ competition for land, i.e. direct and indirect land-use change
❖ agricultural intensification
❖ eutrophication
❖ risks posed by invasive species Eutrophication

A challenge for resource management in the
bioeconomy…
…is to increase human development within the world biocapacity threshold!

The Human Development Index

(HDI) is calculated using three
components: education, life
expectancy at birth and wealth.

The Ecological Footprint

measures how much land and
water area a population requires to
produce the resources it consumes
and to absorb its waste.

The world biocapacity is the

global productive area available on
Earth (it decreases as population
grows).

Less Most developed

What risks would arise if the actual economy
is largely transformed to bioeconomy?

?
• Many of these resources today called renewable, may not
be sufficiently reproducible in the future.
• Higher demand for food, fodder, fuel and fibre consumption
AND additional biomass demand from new bio-based
technologies can push socio–ecological systems over the
edge of tipping points.

!
• Sustainable shift towards bioeconomy must take into
account new kinds of impact on natural capital.
