Teaching Methods and Games (Compilation)

1. lecturing Delivering information from teacher to students. One way direction.

2. Ice breaker “mini games” or activities about 2-5 minutes to open lesson or in the midle
of lesson to create enthusiasm.

3. brain storming Collecting ideas from students. Categorizing, classifying, or summarizing.

4. Games Using games to help student understand or using games to make learning
more fun.

5. Discussion A process of sharing ideas in a small group or as a class.

6. Presentation Students explaining something in a various way (speech, visual aid, drama,
etc.)

7. Debate Students defend argument systematically and orderly.

8. Consenssus Discussion about matters that need consenssus.

comics into a short story.

14. Movie Using a film to teach: fiction, documentary, clips.

15. Role play Creates situation as it is in real world.

16. Question – Answer Sheet Do the exercises, supervised by teacher.

17. Reading Silent reading, reading step by step, reading aloud, reading competition.

18. Exhibition Presenting works as a group project. Students/teachers invite other


student and/or parent to visit stands.

19. Fieldtrip Visiting site(s) or place(s) related to learning outcomes. (Visiting zoo,
airport, beach, etc.)

20. Live-in Exposure Homestay with a community to feel and experience how other people lives.

21. Jigsaw Students gather in several groups as “expert” to have deeper understanding
of one topic, then they change group members to share to another group.

22. Case Study Learn from cases to be solved / analyzing the problems.

23. Guest Speaker Invite guest speakers (e.g. doctor, police, army, alumni) to talk or to share
about profession, problems, etc.

24. Research Research / practical in laboratory or to observe object / people.

25. Round Robin / Rally Robin Students in group of 4, talks in timed order.

27. Circle in – Circle Out Students stand in two circle. One circle smaller is inside of a bigger circle.

28. Swap the Cards Students write questions on cards. Then they swap cards.

29. Interview Students interviewing people.

30. Learning Log Students learn individually and teacher provides a sheet / a form to
monitor individual learning.

31. Knowledge Bank a “bank” account, student has a “knowledge account”. This is like a note,
but with parent/teacher acknowledgement. If one student shares his/her
knowledge to other student, he/she has signature from other student.

32. Sharing Board / Sharing Student and teacher have a share board consist of information and ideas.

Several Games
1. scan and pick
Teachers give instruction, students walk around and scanning cards/tools/pictures
relevant to the task given. Then, they pick items match with the instruction.
2. mystery box
Students take something from the box then talk about it (or show it to other student or
tell to other student how to use it)
3. relate the words
Teacher gives a picture (e.g. a chair than student say “sit”. Sitting is related to the
chair)
4. the lost words (alphabet)
Teacher gives a phrase than hide a word or an alphabet.
5. the word chains
Students write words on cards and stick it. The longer the better.
6. O and x
Playing questions and answer in 2 groups. If one group answers the right question,
they may choose 1 box and mark it as o or x. The group who made a line with o or x
wins.

7. treasure hunt
Teachers hide objects/questions and answers in classroom and students seek it.
8. talking token
A student who is holding a token (ballpoint, eraser, doll, etc.) may talk or ask
questions.
9. balloon man
A group competition. If a group answers to the question correctly they will receive a
balloon. The balloon then to be put on one of the members. The more balloon the
better.
10. one move one sound
A group guides one person to find something in the classroom. They use sounds to
guide (sounds not words).

11. silent game


A group of students communicate using picture, gesture, or writing on a piece of
paper to solve the problem.

12. writing on my back


A student writes (or draws) something on other student’s back using her finger and
her friend guess it.

13. human mirror
Students stand in pairs. One of them lead the action and other student copy the
action but in opposite way (like a mirror). If one student ask question, the other
student answers it. But, if a student give a statement (or concept), other student make
the question relate to that statement.
14. human circle
Teacher put pictures on the floor. When teacher says “plane” students run and stand,
circling the picture. Students then answer to the questions on the plane.
15. look at the right, look at the left
Teacher put a lot of pictures on the wall. Students walk in a circle. Teacher says
“stop, look at the left, look at the right”, students read questions on the picture wall
then answer it.
16. walking eraser
Teacher put several words on the wall with several mistakes. Students erase that
mistake and fix it.
17. cut and paste
Teacher put several sentences on the floor with some missing words or concept.
Students take a look at it, back to their station to find the missing words. They cut the
word and paste it to the sentences on the floor.
18. wish bottle
Each student has a bottle and every day they write/draw something then keep it in the
bottle. Every 2 weeks they open it, read it and tell story about it or (if questions)
answer it. Example: I Wish I could answer 2:3 = ?
19. circle and story
Students sit in a circle. One student chooses one question. Then he tells to other
students why he chose that picture.
20. Read my notes/answer
Student brings her note/answer. She swaps her note with friends of her. Teacher
counts the time (or play music). If time’s up, student gives the note back to her friend.
