ELL830 - Advanced Analog Integrated Circuits - Minor 1

Indian Institute of Technology Delhi

Time: 1.30 hour; Total marks: 30
Instructions
• Read the questions carefully. If the question is wrong state what is wrong and if any circuit
parameter or device state is not mentioned, assume as per your convenience. Don’t ask for
any clarification, there is nothing to clarify!!.
• Be concise, write no more than couple of sentences for every question.

Q1. (a) A student uses bulk of a MOS an an input terminal. Comment if this is good from an
SNR point of view in comaprison to gate being an input terminal. (2 marks) √
(b) Prove that in √ series connected input stage the voltage noise increases by 2 while the
current noise decrease by 2. (3 marks)
(c) In the circuit shown in figure 1, determine the total input and output referred noise using
adjoint network theorem. en are noise sources of the respective elements. (3 marks)
(d) Explain why common drain must never be the first stage of an amplifier for noise consi-
derations. (2 marks)

Q2. (a) Compare the noise of the two circuits shown in figure 2. (2 marks)
(b) In the circuit shown in figure 3, determine the total input referred noise. (3 marks)

Q3. (a) In the circuit shown in figure 4, for low input refereed noise
(i) How you would choose the aspect ratio and transconductance of the input differential
pair (M0 , M00 , M1 , and M10 ). (2 marks)
(ii) How should the current I0 , I00 be chosen with respect to the source currents of M4 and
M5 . (1 marks)
(iii) What should be the aspect ratio of transistors M4 , M5 , M2 and M3 with respect to the
input differential pair. (2 marks)
(iv) What should be the aspect ratio of transistor M8 , M9 , M6 and M7 with respect to the
input differential pair. Can these transistor be biased in weak inversion region? Explain briefly. (3
marks)
(v) If the current source IF is not ideal, how will it influence the total input referred noise?
(2 marks)

Q4. (a) Chopping uses chopper to reduce 1/f noise. How should you choose your chopping fre-
quency relative to 1/f corner frequency? (2 marks)
(b) Frame your own question worth 3 marks, justify why it should be graded for 3 marks
and write the answer. Direct example questions from any textbook will not be evaluated. Numerical
and direct class note stuff will not get you good marks. (3 marks)
