Course Outline
Introduction
An information system (IS) is a formal, sociotechnical, organizational system designed to collect,
process, store, and distribute information. In a sociotechnical perspective, information systems are
composed by four components: task, people, structure (or roles), and technology. With Information
Technology (IT) and systems becoming a significant force shaping entire industries and value
creation in firms, managers in every functional role must understand their role of selecting the
right IT and systems. Managers should also learn the factors that lead to successful adoption and
governance of IT-based systems in their organization. This course introduces the basic concepts
related to IT based systems and discusses the managerial aspects of transforming data into
information and treating information as a strategic organizational asset.
Course Objectives
The specific objectives of the course are:
1) To familiarize about basic concepts related to information technology (IT).
2) To understand how information systems are used in organizations.
3) To learn the basics of communication, computer networks, and IT infrastructure.
4) To familiarize about information security and privacy issues.
5) To familiarize about artificial intelligence and automation concepts.

Academic Integrity:
IIM Rohtak IPM Manual defines behaviors which violate the principles of academic
integrity, describes a range of appropriate sanctions for offenses, and identifies a method
for promoting the principle of academic integrity. It is required that each student shall
demonstrate honesty and integrity in the completion of all assignments and in the
participation of the learning process. The Course will not tolerate plagiarism, copying or
active or passive collaboration in this type of dishonest behavior in the examination papers
written by our students. This penalty for plagiarism will be immediate failure of the course.
Furthermore, the Institute will initiate proceedings against the student that could lead to
his/her expulsion from the program.
