Homework #8: Cement Calculations Due Date: 11/12/2023

1. A 10,000 ft well with a fracture gradient of 16.2 lb/gal equivalent mud weight is
going to be cemented with a 16.8 lb/gal slurry. The mud weight in the well is 15.7
lb/gal. If the equivalent circulating density increase is 0.3 lb/gal, resulting from fluid
circulation, how high can the cement top could be circulated without fracturing the
casing seat?

2. A 3,000-ft, 13 3/8 in surface casing string is to be cemented in a 17.5 in hole. The

1,000 ft tail slurry is 14.2 lb/gal Class G cement with 4% gel. The remaining lead
slurry is 12.2 lb/gal Class G cement with 16% gel. Use a 100% volumetric washout
factor. Compute the cement, mixwater, and gel requirements.
For lead cement, cement yield is 2.55 ft3/sack, water requirement is 14.7 gal/sack.
For teal cement, cement yield is 1.52 ft3/sack, water requirement is 7.57 gal/sack.

3. A well was drilled to 10,000 ft in Jim Hogg County, Texas. A 10.2

lb/gal mud was used. The 5-in. production casing was set at 10,000 ft and cemented
with a 3,000 ft, 16.4 lb/gal slurry. After the cement was displaced into the annulus,
the float valve in the guide shoe would not seal to prevent U-tubing the cement.
Compute the amount of pressure that had to be held at the top of the casing.

4. The Westex Oil Company is planning to set a 7.0 in (29.0 lb/ft) production string
inside an 8 ½ in hole. The float collar is two joints above the guide shoe, i.e., at 9,920
ft, the rat hole is 10 ft. Westex wants to use a sufficient volume of 15.7 lb/gal Class H
cement such that the cement top is at least a 1,000 ft inside the intermediate casing, or
at 7,000 ft in this case. The slurry yield is 1.17 ft 3/sack, and the water requirement is
5.19 gal/sack. Compute the following:
1. Total fluid volume
2. Cement requirements
3. The volume of the mixing water
(Assume 30% volumetric washout)
