FukushimaNuclearDisaster
Many people worry about the dangers that nuclear power plants pose for people and the
environment.Nuclear power systems are designed to include many safety features, and almost all nuclear
power plantsworksafelyand efficiently.Butnatural disasterscanhappen.
One of the world’s most recent and serious nuclear disasters occurred at a power plant in
Fukushima,Japan.OnMarch 11,2011,severalnuclearreactors
attheFukushimaplantweredamagedbyamassive8.9-magnitude earthquake and a huge 33-foot-high
tsunami. After the earthquake struck, the reactor’scooling system lost power. When the cooling system
failed, pressure in the reactor kept on rising, andradiation inside the plant rose to 1,000 times its normal
level. The destroyed reactors were flooded withseawaterin an unsuccessfulattempttopreventanuclear
meltdown.
Newspapers reported that approximately 160 people were exposed to radiation, and that three
plantworkers suffered from full radiation sickness. Over 200,000 people had to be evacuated from the
areasurrounding the site. Radiation from the nuclear plant even spread north and west toward the West
CoastoftheUnitedStates.Itwas detectedbyscientistsinSacramento,California,tendays later.
Fifty Fukushima plant workers remained on-site at the nuclear reactor after 750 other workers
wereevacuated. The jobs of these remaining workers were to prevent fires, keep the nuclear core cool
withseawater, and install new power lines. These brave workers were limited to working in blocks of 15
minutesinhigh-radiationareas.All theworkerswore specialsuits andmaskstokeepthem assafeaspossible.
