Life is Fantastic, Without Plastic!

While LEO Africa’s main focuses are wildlife monitoring and conservation, we also try our best
to educate our volunteers about sustainable living and how to actively apply these tips in the
daily life. Our aim is to reduce the amount of plastic used, as well as being careful not to waste
natural resources, use what you already have and buy second hand when possible. LEO
Africa has set a sustainability policy, in which we try to teach and actively apply these values
at camp and in our daily lives (we skip any single use plastic such as straws, plastic bags,
water bottles and take away containers).
We are aware that in our society plastic is used a lot, but we could all try to reduce its usage
by paying attention to the items we buy and their packaging. Plastic has really harmful
consequences on wildlife and ecosystems. We try to be very careful about plastic consumption
because of many reasons, including:
• Plastic ends up as litter in trees, storm water drains, on beaches and in the
ocean, being the cause of death of many fishes, land and sea animals.
• Plastic is in the food chain! The result is that not only animals eat plastic and
die, but we also eat it!
• Plastic contaminates the soil and water by leaching chemicals

In line with our sustainable policy and anti-plastic campaign we are trying to introduce our
volunteers to a plastic and sustainable lifestyle. At LEO Africa, we have made a partnership
with some local businesses to create a plastic free toiletry pack for our volunteers. All
products are made locally using only natural ingredients and the purchase will help supporting
a small business! The plastic free pack offers a healthy alternative to traditional toiletries sold
in plastic and leave extra space in your suitcase!
