Dry-dock Check List - PREPARATION

Updated by DKramer 22/10/15

Item Description Done, Date Remarks

Timing All timing is BEFORE planned docking date.
Timing-12 months Preparation for docking to start 1 year in advance.

INSPECTION by ship's personnel and Superintendent to identify work required, as

best possible, work to be done in service.
WORK ORDERS for service and/or dry-dock work to be created,
drawings/photographs to be attached.

All possible steel work, cross decks, railings, repairs to ventilation ducts in cargo
holds, overhaul of hold vent fans etc must be completed.

Dry-dock work is costly and preferable work is completed in service with ship's
Timing-8/7 months personnel and or riding teams. Who completed, action?
Only work which cannot be carried out in service to be done in dry-dock.

Special attention is to be paid to hull and deck defects like cracks, indentations,
damages, condition of hatch covers, damages in cargo holds etc. There is sufficient
information and guides available to help you with your inspection specially of critical
areas, where defects are most common. You may take guidance of our naval
architects. DO NOT WAIT FOR NAVAL ARCHITECTS TO FIND DEFECTS FOR
YOU IN DRYDOCK, which comes as a big surprise with increased docking time and
expense.

Timing-6 months Specification issued, Request For Quotation(RFQ) received, updated in software.
Timing-6 months Shipyard awarded docking, which yard.
Timing-6 months Specification completed.
Timing-6 months Plan repairs for riding gang, organise riding gang
Timing-5months Spare orders - place orders.
Underwater inspection completed, if any additional work, quotes obtained and work

Timing-3 months Paint ordered.
Timing-3 months Crewing to be advised on extra manpower
Timing-2 months Spare parts - to be onboard.
Timing-2 months Executive Communication(EC) to be provided.
Timing-1month
Reporting to be compiled and submitted
post dry-dock
Ballast condition for Dock entry to be recorded so that correct ballast can be re-filled
Ballast Condition
after docking. Advise office of ballast quantity.
Ballast Condition MAX trim of 1% of LOA with a MAX draft of 6m for docking.
Bilge wells Hold bilges dry and bilge well openings covered with canvas to prevent grit ingress.

Chief Officer to be familiar with the location of F.O. tank plugs so that they are not
Bottom plugs opened by mistake.
Chief officer to be personally present when opening of the bottom plugs.
He is to keep the bottom plugs in his safe custody after marking the respective plugs.
A list is to be kept to record removal and fitting, date and time.

Cargo Care - Confirm that the REFCON system is operational. If not take action for spares/repair.
REFCON This system is to be operational prior dry-dock departure.
At each dry-dock cycle all stevedore damages are to be either closed and/or
Cargo Care -
repaired. Each Damage repaired must be linked to a Damage Report that was
Stevedore
already provided to the Charterer. Review the list of damages, inspect the ship and
damages
carry out the necessary repairs.
All CSH(Continuous Survey Hull) survey work to be completed in dry-dock, ALL.
Class - CSH Commence surveys a year in advance, use surveyor, ship's personnel, and
Superintendent to identify prior dry-dock and complete surveys.

Ensure all CSM(Continuous Survey Machinery) surveys carried out by C/E requiring
crediting are placed in a file ready for inspection.
NOTE: All CSM to be credited in class listing and NS5.
DNV-GL and LR have different approaches to CSM, discuss with Manoj or David if
unsure how to manage this.
Class - CSM For DNV-GL, not all items have to be closed every 5 year cycle.
For LR, all items have to be closed every cycle.
For main engine bearings, review the DNV-GL and LR Seaspan agreement letters,
NOTE that not all bearings need to be opened, only some which will result in the
crediting of all. The NS5 work order for each bearing credited must note if that
specific bearing was opened or not.

Dry-dock Check List - PREPARATION

Item Description Done, Date Remarks

Check with class what surveys are required, does propeller or tailshaft have to be
removed?

LR requires keyless propeller to be backed-off every second special survey. DNV-GL

requirement is every 15 years. Plan your ships dry-dock accordingly.
Since propeller will be removed, in-situ bonding of aft seal will not be necessary. Aft
seal liner must be skimmed at this time to remove any grooving/pitting and a spacer
fitted back. By doing this, the liner can last for another 10 years.
Class -
Propeller
When propeller backed-off for inspection and MPT. Ensure proper precautions are
taken, temperature and distance measurement by more than one means. Discuss
the push-up curve with the shipyard – push up load and corresponding distance and
temperature.
There have been cases in the past, where the propeller nut has seized due to foreign
material on the shaft threads. It is very important that nut and shaft threads are
properly cleaned.

Vent heads for all tanks to be inspected, opened, cleaned, repair work as
necessary(gauge replaced, bolts, etc) done as necessary and recoated.
