Subject: Suggestions to Make Tourist Spots Appealing

Respected Sir/Madam
Through the columns of your esteemed daily, I would like to draw the attention of the concerned
authorities as well as the general public towards the lack of maintenance of tourist spots.
My recent experience at a popular tourist spot close to where I live has left me extremely
disappointed and I couldn't help but wonder at the way the place was being maintained. I was
saddened to see the place littered with garbage, empty bottles and wrappers of eatables, entry
ticket, etc. but no one to clean it.

This is the result of the callous attitude of the people visiting the tourists’ spots and their complete
disregard for the rules laid down by the authorities. In addition to that caretakers fail to take
proper care of the place, which leads to its gradual ruination. Tourist spots, lying in utter neglect
are an eye sore and create a negative impression on tourists. It also puts our country in bad light
further leading to its negative publicity. The authorities should take strict action against those
caught littering, breaking the rules or causing any kind of damage to the tourist spots. Residents
living in the surrounding areas, with the help of volunteers, should start cleanliness drives and
also encourage others to take the initiative.
I hope, I have been able to highlight the problem in this letter and that the suggested solutions will
help bring about some positive changes.
Thank you

Yours sincerely

6. (A) Importance of Art
By Rani

Art has existed for many years in our society. We have seen paintings in caves and rocks.
However, many of us don't take art very seriously. We think it's something anyone can do. But art
needs lots of creativity and is very important for our society. It's a part of what makes we human,
a form of expression. When children are young, they draw to express themselves. They try to
draw something creative that reflects their thought process.
Art is also a remarkable mode of depicting culture from all over the world. Just like the paintings
made in caves and rocks by the ancient people, it gives us an idea about their culture and a form
of preserving it. It reflects a society's beliefs, cultural values, etc.
Art is powerful because it can potentially influence our culture, politics, and even the economy.
When we see a powerful work of art, we feel moved, connected to a wider understanding of
human experience. It calls to the emotional response and make people access higher and deeper
ways of thinking and perception.
In today's world art can be consumed in varied formats like films, music, painting, sculpture, etc.
Art has the flexibility to educate and awaken the consciousness of people while entertaining its
audience/spectator.
Art may not cure diseases and drive away poverty but it plays a big role in evoking empathy and
care towards the world. After all what's knowledge without soul, just logic without purpose and
art provides the soul for our collective understanding.

12. (A) Owner of a roadside stand: Your bangles are pretty. Tell me about your experience in this
business.
Bangle Maker: Thank you. I have been making bangles for as long as I can remember. It’s
a family business, and we have been doing it for generations. But it’s not an easy business.
The cry of not having money to do anything except carry on the business of making
bangles, not even enough to eat, rings in every home. To be plain we barely make enough
to survive.
Owner of a roadside stand: I understand. It’s tough out here for small businesses. But I
have to say, your bangles are beautiful. Have you ever thought about expanding your
business?

Bangle Maker: We have tried, but it’s not easy. We don’t have the resources to expand,
and we don’t have the connections to get our products to the city. It’s a struggle just to
make ends meet.
Owner of a roadside stand: I know what you mean. I come from a small village too. But I
started this roadside stand, and it’s been doing well. Far from the city, we make our
roadside stand and we wish to get some city money to manage our livelihood. It’s not
much, but it’s enough to survive.
Bangle Maker: That’s impressive. Maybe I should try something like that.
Owner of a roadside stand: You should. You have a great product, and people would love
to buy it. You just need to find a way to get it out there. Don’t give up on your dreams.
Bangle Maker: Thank you for the encouragement. I will think about it.

(B) Rashmi: How can one compare a mother’s face to a corpse? And do you really think,
Rehaan, that in today’s world of Instagram story updates, one can ever be in a state of total
inactivity as urged by Neruda in his poem Keeping Quiet?

Rehaan: I think Kamala Das’s comparison of her mother’s face to a corpse is a metaphor
for the aging process. It’s a reminder that life is fleeting and that we should cherish the
moments we have with our loved ones. As for Neruda’s poem, I think he’s urging us to
take a moment of silence and introspection to connect with ourselves and the world around
us. In today’s world, where we are constantly bombarded with information and
distractions, it's more important than ever to take a step back and reflect.

Rashmi: But how can we be in a state of total inactivity when our existence is judged by
how “active” we are on social networking sites? We are expected to constantly update our
profiles, share our thoughts and opinions, and engage with others. It’s like we’re always
“on,” and there’s no time for quiet contemplation.

Rehaan: I understand what you’re saying, Rashmi, but I think there’s a difference between
being “active” on social media and being truly engaged with the world around us. We can
use social media as a tool to connect with others and share our ideas, but we should also
take the time to disconnect and reflect. In Neruda’s poem, he talks about the importance of
“not doing” and just being present in the moment. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the most
meaningful experiences come from just being still and observing.

Rashmi: I see your point, Rehaan. Maybe we need to find a balance between being

“active” on social media and taking the time to disconnect and reflect. And Kamala Das’s

poem is a reminder that we should cherish the moments we have with our loved ones,

even if they are fleeting.

Rehaan: Exactly. Life is short, and we should make the most of it. We can use social

media to connect with others, but we should also take the time to be present in the moment

and appreciate the world around us.

Rashmi: Thank you for sharing your perspective, Rehaan. It’s given me a lot to think

about.

Rehaan: Anytime, Rashmi. It’s always good to have a meaningful conversation.

Dear Diary

Earlier when I was informed about the frequent disappearance of sheep from a hillside
village, I was so happy that I announced a three-year exemption from all taxes for that
village and set out on the hunt at once. But now it really getting exasperating. My wait
seems endless to me as the tiger is nowhere to be found even after so many days of
camping and roaming about in this huge forest searching for the beast in every nook and
corner, trying to listen to alarm calls and the sound of the tiger’s clandestine movements.
The villagers seem to have befooled me and they should be duly punished for such
audacity. They don’t deserve any kind of lenience and concession. I’ll ask the dewan to
repeal the given concession and double the land tax. Now all my efforts and years, I put in
achieving my desired goal appear to be goose chase. I should think of something else to
get my plan work.
It’s too late! I should go to bed for now.
Bye!

(B) My moment of happiness to visit my native village faded soon when I could still sense the
lingering presence of discrimination. It pains me to see that despite all the progress I have
made and the efforts I have put in to overcome caste discrimination and untouchability,
the roots of prejudice still run deep in this place I once called home.
As I walked through the familiar streets, I couldn't help but notice the subtle glances and
whispers that followed me. The walls of discrimination still stand tall, dividing people
based on their caste and perpetuating the cycle of inequality. It breaks my heart to see my
fellow Dalits still subjected to the same mistreatment and humiliation that I once endured.
I had hoped that my achievements and position in the administrative field would inspire
change and break down these barriers. But it seems that the battle against discrimination is
far from over. The fight for equality and respect is an ongoing struggle that requires
constant vigilance and unwavering determination.
I feel a deep sense of agony and frustration, knowing that despite my best efforts, the
village I once called home remains trapped in the clutches of prejudice. But this only fuels
my resolve to continue fighting for justice and equality. I will not let the discrimination I
witnessed dampen my spirit or deter me from my mission to be a role model for all Dalits.
I will use my position and influence to raise awareness, challenge the status quo, and
advocate for change. Every step forward, no matter how small, brings us closer to a
society where caste discrimination is nothing but a distant memory. I will not rest until
that day comes.
