Safety of Women in the Capital

By Sudha

ro
It is a matter of shame that Delhi is one of the least safe places for women in the
country. Women are subjected to all sorts of harassment and discrimination, not only
when they are out of home among outsiders, but also in their own homes. There are
reports of minors, even little babies, having been raped by close relatives or next-door
|G
neighbours. Cases of eve-teasing, molestation and exploitation at public places and
workplaces are too common. Thus, women have to live in a state of constant fear.

It is high time that the government make strict laws to prevent crime against women, not
only on papers but in action. Deterrent punishment should be given to the guilty. The
government should introduce institutional services, special helpline numbers for women,
self defense training, etc. to ensure safety and security of women in Delhi.
D

Violence against women is a grave violator of human rights which must not be tolerated
at all.
B

Good Morning respected principal, teachers and my dear friends.

Today I, Shivani, stand before you to express my views on the topic ‘Youth as the
M

Crusaders of the Environment’.

We all consider the earth as our mother but we are not taking care of it. We are well
aware of the situation that our environment is facing. The degradation that the Earth is
going through is shameful. Climate change or global warming is the greatest threat. It is
a tangible threat to our everyday well-being. We are in a state of planetary emergency.

The earth is suffering only because of its inhabitants. Human beings are destroying
earth with their selfish activities. It is a now or never situation. Much harm has already
been done. Still we can help save the planet if we, the youth, do our bit. We have to
make our future generations aware about saving our resources in order to save the
planet.

We are the crusaders of the environment and we have to save it from being destroyed.

Getting to Know the Monuments of Delhi
By Shivam

On occasion of World Heritage Day, the students of History Club of XYZ school got a
golden opportunity to attend a 10-day summer programme on ‘Getting to know the

up
monuments of Delhi’. The aim of the programme was to promote awareness about the
diversity of our cultural heritage, their vulnerability and the efforts required for their
protection and conservation.

The students went to India Habitat Centre, Lodi Road from 18th April, 20xx to 27th April,
20xx to attend the camp organised by Archeological Survey of India. The students got a

ro
taste of the rich Indian history by visiting the architectural marvels of Delhi. The
programme started with the workshop which continued for the first two days. Many
historians and scholars attended the workshop and enlightened the students about the
monuments – the stories behind their constructions and ways to conserve them. For the
|G
next 7 days, the students visited the monuments to explore and trace the history of this
beautiful and magnificent city. The programme concluded with another session at IHC
on the last day which comprised of a Q & A session and certificate distribution.

Homes for the Aged are a Necessity in India

Good morning jury members, worthy opponents and my dear friends. I, Pratibha, would
like to present my views in favour of the motion, ‘Homes for the aged are a necessity in
D

India’.

The system of joint families is fast changing into nuclear families. Women no longer
B

remain confined to their domestic chores. They have begun to move out of their homes
and take up jobs to supplement the income of their families. Young men and women
have started to move to other cities and countries for job opportunities. In these
M

changed situations, the old and elderly people are left alone in their homes. They feel
neglected and unwanted since the young ones have no time to attend to them.
There was a time when the younger generation used to be very respectful towards the
elderly people. They were thought of as wise and experienced. They were consulted in
making decisions on all important matters. But now the elders are often pushed aside,
neglected and even scorned. Surely, these elderly people don’t deserve such a shabby
treatment.
There should be homes for the aged where those who feel neglected in their own
homes can pass the last days of their life with dignity and respect. Thus, homes for the
aged have nowadays become a necessity in India.
Thank you.

SECTION-C

(Literature Textbooks)

7. (a) The story is ‘Going Places’ and the author is A.R. Barton.
(b) Sophie’s mother’s back is stooped and it is highlighted to show that this might be
Sophie’s future burdened with responsibilities.
(c) Geoff was working as an apprentice mechanic at the far side of the city.

up
(d) The above lines show that Sophie belonged to the lower middle class of the society.

8. (a) Things of beauty are the flowery bands that bind us to the earth.
(b) ‘Spite of despondence’ means in spite of all the depression and dejection.
(c) The normal course of life includes grief, depression, sad days and lack of truly noble
souls.

ro
(d) All the things of beauty are made for our searching so that we can remove our
gloom.

9. a) Mukesh’s family has accepted bangle making as their destiny. His grandmother
|G
says ‘It is his karam, his destiny’ as her husband belonged to a family of bangle makers.
She calls it a god given lineage that cannot be broken.
(b) McLeery had with him a small brown suitcase. It contained all that he could need for
his examination duties. It included a sealed question-paper envelope, a yellow
invigilation form, a special ‘authentication’ card from the Examinations Board, a
paperknife, Bible and a copy of The Church Times.
(c) Gandhiji influenced the lawyers by his example of selfless service. He was prepared
D

to go to jail for the sake of the poor peasants who were strangers to him. The lawyers
were deeply impressed. They too became ready to go to jail.
(d) The poor farmer keeps waiting all day for some car to stop at his stand. But hardly
any car stops there. With a longing heart, he keeps sitting by the open window and
B

waiting all day. His longing proves vain when no one comes to buy the things he has put
up for sale.
(e) Perhaps Aunt Jennifer created through the tigers a picture of her own husband.
M

There is also a suggestion that women create men but those very men dominate and
tyrannise over women when they grow up. Also this shows her inherent desire to be like
tigers.
(f) Mr Lamb is an old man. Derry finds that he leaves his gate always open. Everybody
is welcome in his garden. Also there are no blinds on the windows. All these strike Derry
as peculiar things.
(g) It was the day of Evans’ exam. He was going to take his O-level examination in
German. He said that his hat had always brought him some sort of luck. So he wanted
Jackson to let him keep it on his head. The real reason was that he had trimmed his hair
using the razor which was a part of his plan and he didn’t want the police to know about
it.
10. The writer started fearing water when he was just a little child of three or four years.
His father took him to a beach in California. The two were standing in the surf. The
writer was clinging to his father. But a strong wave came and swept over him. He was
buried in water. His breath was gone. His father laughed, but the writer was filled with
fear. This incident left in him a great fear of water. This fear was further strengthened by
the incident at the Y.M.C.A. pool. He was nearly drowned and could have died but
luckily, he was saved. Even afterwards, fear of water spoiled all his joys of fishing,
boating and swimming. So, he determined firmly to learn swimming and to get over this
fear. He got an instructor who made a swimmer out of him. To prove to himself that he
had defeated the terror, he visited some famous water spots. There he swam across

up
them without any difficulty. He shouted with joy when his determination made him
overcome his old terror.

Subbu was very close to The Boss and was very loyal to him. He had a hand in almost

ro
every affair during the golden days of the studio. He had some sterling qualities of his
own. He had a solution for even the most difficult situation. He was tailor-made for films.
For him film making was easy. He was an amazing actor, yet he never aspired for the
lead role. But whatever role he played, he performed better than the main players. He
|G
had a separate identity as a poet. He could certainly write in more complex and higher
forms, but he deliberately chose to write for the masses.
According to me, a good leader is the one who has knowledge and inspires the group.
He is also honest, confident, passionate and committed. He also has good decision-
making skills.

11. Geoff Green looks upon students as important and responsible members of our
future generation. They are our future policy-makers. They have the ability to absorb,
D

learn and act. That was why he included high school students in his expedition. By their
visit to Antarctica, they could see for themselves how real the danger of global warming
is. Receding glaciers and collapsing ice shelves could tell them how the danger of
B

floods was increasing day by day. Thus they could develop a new understanding and
respect for their planet. And when they grow up, they will take steps to stop the harms
that are being done to the earth. They will take steps to fight such problems as the rapid
M

increase of human populations and unmitigated burning of fossil fuels. They will take
steps to ensure that life continues to exist on this planet. It was for these educational
reasons that Geoff Green included high school students in the ‘Students on Ice’
expedition.

OR

In the past, punishment was the only way to treat criminals. It could also go to the extent
of life-imprisonment or death sentence. In the modern age, efforts are made to reform
the criminals. Hence police, prison officers and judges develop a soft corner for the
people in custody. The behaviour of prison officer Jackson illustrates the above point.
Mr Jackson had asked Evans to remove his hat but Evans requested him to allow it to
wear it during the exam as it brought luck to him. He also let McLeery take the rubber
ring with him which Evans used in escaping from the prison. Later when Evans was
located in the Golden Lion in Chipping Norton by the Governor of Oxford Prison, instead
of bringing him securely back to prison, he handed him over to a fake prison officer who
did not even salute him and whom he had never seen before. As a result, Evans was
able to escape once again.
