Technology has big impact to the lives of mankind. According to a college

student in North America in her anecdote, connectivity or the easy access of online
communication has brought family and the world within reach. However, a study
had proven that using technology declined students’ academic performance,
dehumanized school environments, distorted socialization and isolated
individuals (Alhumaid, 2019). Too much association with technology changes
humans to become less affectionate and carefree.

Is social media good or bad?

Social media is a means of communication reaching out to people all

over the world. Many researches show that social media has both the good
and bad sides. A study claimed that Whatsapp and Facebook improved
reading skills of the Facebook users; however, it leads students to be poor in
grammar and spelling. It also let the students spend less time in studying,
submit late assignments and become social media addicts (Mingle, & Adams,
2015).

Lau (2017) also concluded that, “Social media does not affect the
performance of students in school, but, social media multitasking and video
gaming highly affects their academic performance”. Parents must be vigilant
of their children’s engagement in social media. No one can predict the
implications of social media into our lives.

Were you able to answer the pre-assessment perfectly? You may check the key
answers. This time, you may proceed to the next activity of this module.

Let Us Study

You are about to learn the substance of the module. You may relax yourself and
unleash your mind from any apprehensions. Happy Learning!

Synthesizing is an ability to combine different ideas to create a sensible writing

piece. Not all are gifted writers. To become one, we must be equipped with varied
ideas, must be rich in vocabulary and must be knowledgeable in sentence structure
and grammar.

Writing can be fun, too. However, for everyone to appreciate it, we have to
learn first how to synthesize ideas. Synthesizing needs skills like paraphrasing or
summarizing.

When you synthesize, you need to paraphrase or to summarize. This module

can give you better understanding on paraphrasing.

Activity 1 Recall me
Read closely the text below and take note of the most important details that
will help you connect in the succeeding tasks.

8
Jess: (chatting to Drew) Hey, Drew! How are you?

Drew: I’m good, Jess! What are you busy with?

Jess: I’m reviewing our previous module on primary sources and secondary sources.

Drew: That sounds cool! What have you learned, Jess?

Jess: Well, I have learned that primary sources are first-hand account of an event
or time period and are considered to be authoritative. This includes diaries, original
documents, biographies, autobiographies, manuscripts, interviews, speeches, oral
histories, newspaper, and editorial/opinion pieces. In here, we can get information
for our research or any writing piece we will make. Right, Drew?

Drew: You are definitely right, Jess. On the other hand, secondary sources offer an
analysis, interpretation or a restatement of primary sources and are considered to
be persuasive. Some examples of secondary sources are journal articles, dictionaries,
encyclopedias, books and political commentary. See, Jess, I also reviewed. ☺

Jess: Great! I’m so excited for our next lesson.

Drew: I, too.

Were you able to remember your lesson on different sources of information? This
is very necessary in your succeeding activities. Hope you catch up. Let’s continue.

Wearing of masks now mandatory in Davao City

DAVAO CITY – Mayor Sara Duterte has urged the public to use the proper
masks recommended by doctors to protect them from the coronavirus disease
2019 (COVID-19).
In the latest Executive Order No. 20-A, it was cited there that Dabawenyos
would be required to wear masks when going outside.
“Face masks with face shields are encouraged,” it said.
Duterte said, “Follow the recommendation of the doctors to wear the proper
surgical masks, and those that are given to you by the city government,” The masks
distributed to the public were prescribed and designed by the infectious disease
doctors. Using reusable masks are not adequate enough to filter the virus.

Simple DIY masks could help flatten the curve
We should all wear them in public.

Facing shortages of the N95 masks needed by health-care workers, the

U.S. surgeon general announced on Feb. 29 that masks “are NOT effective in
preventing general public from catching #Coronavirus,” despite significant
scientific evidence to the contrary. This is not just a problem in the United
States. Even the World Health Organization says, “you only need to wear a mask
if you are taking care of a person with suspected 2019-nCoV infection.”
DIY (Do It Yourself) masks would help people a lot. As what George Gao,

Should We All Be Wearing Face Masks?

Here's Why Experts Are So Conflicted

Conflicting recommendations
Two of the world's major health organisations disagree on mask wearing.
The World Health Organisation(WHO) currently discourages mask use: There is
currently no evidence that wearing a mask (whether medical or other types) by
healthy persons in the wider community setting, including universal community
masking, can prevent them from infection with respiratory viruses, including
COVID-19.
WHO does recommend special masks (N95 masks or equivalent) plus other
protection for health-care workers working with people who have, or are suspected
to have, COVID-19.
By contrast, the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the
United States has recently recommended everyone to wear a (cloth) mask.
However, this is to prevent infected people passing on the infection, not to prevent
the wearer getting infected.

Writing is not an easy acitivity yet constant practice of reading and writing can
help you improve yourself and feel fulfilled after doing composition writing. Still, what
you did was a good job!

This was the step-by-step process you did in your activity.

1. Reading several times the different sources

2. Organizing notes in every sources

3. Identifying relevant ideas and supporting ideas

4. Restructuring your notes by concepts or ideas

5. Combining sources of ideas and your own ideas

6. Writing a paragraph

This is what we call Synthesizing.

TRIVIA

Synthesise and synthesize are synonymous. Synthesise is British

English while synthesize is American English.

Synthesizing is combining different aspects of your ideas and research and the
ideas of others in order to produce new ideas. It is an important aspect of academic
writing.

How do you synthesise?

• When you synthesize, you paraphrase and summarize to

produce new ideas or arguments.

To Synthesise you need the skills of:

• Paraphrasing and Summarizing

(Paraphrasing is to reword the ideas; Summarizing is to sum up or
recap.)
• Unlike a Paraphrase or a Summary, which only use ONE
author’s idea at a time, a Synthesis combines two or more things
to produce a new, more complex product.

• Always with the Question and Thesis Statement in mind.

16
Example:
1. “Why should People Wear Face Mask during Pandemic?”

To acknowledge the source of information:

You may cite works by using in-text citation.

One author: (Cowling, 2019)

Two authors: (Baller & McFord, 1984) Webby& Webster (2003) or

Three or more authors: Dela Peña et al., 2010)

You can introduce source information with a phrase like “according to” or
use signal words like states, argues, claims, concludes, suggests, reveals,
explains, etc. in your statements.

In using source of information, there are two ways;

EXAMPLE 1:

1. In-Text Citation for Direct Quotation –Using quotation marks (“....”) and signal
words like “According to”, states, says and others.

“But if everybody is wearing face masks, that would mean infected

and asymptomatic people are also wearing masks. That could help to
reduce the amount of virus which gets into the environment and
potentially causes infections,” says Ben Cowling, head of epidemiology
and biostatistics at the University of Hong Kong.

2. In-Text Citation (Paraphrased/ Rephrased)

Head of epidemiology and biostatistics at the University of Hong

Kong, Cowling (2019), stated that when all people wear face masks it
will decrease the number of infections.

EXAMPLE 2:

1. In-Text Citation for Direct Quotation

According to Webby & Webster (2003), “Pandemics have existed for

many years; yet, up to this time, no recourse has found to become prepared.
However, the answer to this is by prioritizing what remains to be done and

17
exploring the reasons for our current lack of preparedness for an influenza
pandemic”.

2. In-Text Citation (Paraphrased/ Rephrased)

Webby & Webster (2003) concluded that the only way to become
prepared in any pandemic is to make immediate actions to whatever is needed
and to find remedies to resolve the issue on preparedness.

Study the example of SYNTHESIZED paragraphs:

Table 1.1

“Why should People Wear Face Mask during Pandemic?”

Face masks wearing is an indication of pandemic era. Our lives are

totally changed by this. Both government and private sectors have employed
new set up of their services. There are wide disseminations of Do’s and Don’ts
about our present situation. The writer
World Health Organization (WHO) recommends special masks (N95 masks
or equivalent) plus other protection for healthcare workers working with people who has
have, or are suspected to have, COVID-19. It is supported by Davao City Mayor included
Sara Duterte who mandated all Dabawenyos to wear the prescribed facemask multiple
recommended by the medical team for safety purposes.
However, due to the shortage of these special masks, WHO discouraged the resources
use of masks for it was not yet proven that face mask whether medical or other in the
types can prevent the public from infections. paragraph.
In contrary, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the United
States and Chinese CDC Director General George Gao, had recommended everyone
to wear DIY (Do It Yourself) cloth masks to prevent infected people passing the virus
to others.
Though wearing face masks do not show evidence of protection to mankind,
public must take extra precautions and follow strictly the health protocols given by
the government.

This writer has also analysis and added

something to the text.

The above text is an example of synthesized paragraphs. You may study the sequence
and compare it to your previous output. You may now proceed to the next activity.

are happening, albeit online. But, I am also troubled by the fact that the kids are on
their phone the whole day, for their classes and other online activities. This causes
stress to the eyes and leads to headaches. I also feel kids are not able to take it as
seriously as they would have, had they been in schools. We have limited resources
at home, and they have to be shared now between parents and children. We had to
buy an extra phone for the kids to use for their classes!”

More and more people these days are buying tablets or cellphones
instead of personal computers. Each has advantages over the other. If you
have to write a paper, build a website, or do a lot of computer work, you
will probably want to use a personal computer since it will have a full size
keyboard. Tablets also have keyboards, but they are not as comfortable
to use for long periods of time since they are smaller. If you are just doing
some casual internet browsing, social networking, or messaging, you may
just want to use a tablet.
