MODULE 1 (SCIENCE 6 , MELC, Q1, )

Topic: Ways of Separating Components of Mixtures

Learning Objectives

• Identify components of mixtures

• Enumerate techniques in separating mixtures such as decantation, evaporation,
filtering, sieving, and using magnets

Concepts

• There are many ways of separating mixtures. Heterogeneous mixtures can be separated
by physical manipulation, undissolved solids in liquids can be separated by filtration,
components of suspension can be separated by decantation, elements in solution can
be separated by evaporation or distillation, and mixtures of metals and nonmetals can
be separated by magnetism.
• Evaporation is a technique used in separating soluble solid from a liquid.
• Filtration is a technique that uses a porous barrier to separate a solid from liquid. It uses
a filter like mesh cloth or a filter paper.
• Distillation is a separation technique based on the differences of boiling point of the
substance involved. A mixture is heated. The substance with a lowest boiling point boils
to vapor and condenses to liquid. It is collected as distilled water.
Distillation is used in producing pure water, distilled water, or ethanol. Pure water can
also be obtained from seawater. Most homogeneous solutions can be separated by
distillation.
• Decantation is a technique used in separating a less dense-liquid from a denser one. In
the process of decantation, the mixture is left undisturbed. When the components are
separated, the less-dense substance could be removed by scooping using a spoon or it
can be removed by slowly pouring out the less-dense substance. Oil in water can be
removed using the decantation technique.
• Physical manipulation is a technique used in separating large solid components of a
heterogeneous mixture.
• Use of Magnets – Mixture of metals and nonmetals could be separated using a magnet.
• Sieving - Mixture with big and fine components can be separated by sieving. Sieving involves
using a strainer or a big screen to separate the components of solid mixtures.

• Chromatography is a technique that separates components of mixtures based on the
ability of each component to be drawn across the surface of another material. During
the separation, the various components of materials spread in a different speed.
Components that have the strongest attraction with paper travel slowest.
Chromatography is used in hospitals to detect the level of alcohol in the bloodstream. It
is also used in environmental agencies to detect the level of pollutants in the water
supply.
