SEPARATION of
COMPONENTS of
MIXTURES
At the end of the lesson, the students should
be able to:

a. identify the methods in separating the

components of mixtures;
b.determine the appropriate separating
techniques for the given mixture; and
c. cite the importance of separating mixtures
Processes to Separate Mixtures
When some materials are mixed together, it is
possible to separate the mixture and get the original
materials back again.

There are several different ways of separating

mixtures. The best process to use depends on the
type of mixture you are separating.

Filtration Fractional Crystallization Centrifugation

Chromatography Flotation Distillation

Filtration
This process should be used to separate a mixture of an insoluble solid
and a liquid. A funnel is lined with filter paper and placed over a
beaker. The mixture is poured slowly into the filter paper.

The solid that remains in the filter

paper is called residue while the clear
liquid is referred to as the filtrate.
Flotation
A method in which the mixture is allowed undisturbed for a long
period of time so that heavy particles may settle. Lighter
particles float.

Used in mineral
processing, Paper
recycling,
Concentrating copper,
lead, and zinc
oil
minerals.
water
Centrifugation
This method uses an apparatus called centrifuge
which spins the mixture in very high speed to
separate the dissolved solids in a liquid.
The separation of the components
of mixture is due to the centripetal
force.

This method is usually done to

separate the components of blood
and even organelles of cells.

Distillation
A method used to separate a mixture of two or more liquids with
varying boiling points. When the sample is heated and its
component with the least boiling point evaporates, the vapor is
condensed using a condenser which is then collected as an end
product. The end product is called a distillate.

This method is effectively

used to remove inorganic
compounds from a
contaminated water
Fractional Crystallization
A method that uses solubility to separate substances.
Crystals are formed by lowering of temperature of a
mixture so that more soluble component crystallizes first.
Chromatography
A method uses two phases, the solvent system also called the
mobile phase and the stationary phase which may be a filter
paper, a special plastic strip or silica beads. Components of inks
can be separated by one type of chromatography called paper
chromatography. The resulting filter paper with the separated
components is called a chromatogram.
Group Activity
Directions: Each group will be given one type of
mixture and you will identify which method is the
right way to separate the given mixture. You will be
going to present and explain your answer to the
front.
