12
What is Atom?
◈ it is basic unit of matter.
◈ it is the smallest particle of an element that
has all the properties of the element.

13
Who is Democritus?
◈ Greek philosopher, 460-370 BC.
◈ Named the smallest piece of matter “atomos”
meaning “not to be cut” or indivisible, and
indestructible particle.

15
Who is John Dalton?
 English chemist, 1766-1844.
 He proposed that an element is composed of
tiny, indivisible, indestructible particles called
atoms.
 All atoms of a given element are identical.
 The atoms of a given element are different
from those of any other element.
 Atoms of one element can combine with atoms
of other elements to form compounds.

16
Activity Time!
Directions:
Group the class into two. The group 1 will
present the theory of Democritus and the group
2 will present John Dalton’s theory in the
development of atomic theory.
