Russia Accuses Kyiv Of Shooting Down

Plane With Ukrainian Prisoners

Hi, I'm Oona Chaplin and I'm the host of a new podcast called Hollywood exiles. It tells a story of how
my grandfather, Charlie Chaplin, and many others were caught up in a campaign to root out
communism in Hollywood, Hollywood exiles from CBC podcasts and the BBC World Service. Find it
wherever you get your podcasts.

This is the global news podcast from the BBC World Service. I'm Nick miles and in the early hours of
Thursday, the 25th of January. These are our main stories. Russia has accused key of of shooJng
down a plane, it says was carrying Ukrainian prisoners of war on their way to an exchange. Ukrainian
military has not directly addressed the claims. A senior UN official has accused Israel of displaying
blatant disregard for the rules of war in shelling a VocaJonal Training Center in southern Gaza. Nine
people were killed and over 70 injured. Hundreds of 1000s of workers in ArgenJna are observing a
naJonwide strike in protest at President Javier malaise economic reforms. Also in this podcast, we
learned how to implant an embryo into a surrogate mother there are four major steps how to achieve
a new northern white rhino to be born. And this was the last but one, a glimmer of hope for one of
the world's most endangered big beasts. The Fog of War refers to the uncertainty of what is
happening on both sides of a conflict where an enemy is and the state of its operaJons. It is made
even more complex and potenJally tragic. When prisoner exchanges are taking place on Wednesday,
Moscow accused Ukraine of shooJng down a military plane just inside Russia that it says was carrying
65 Ukrainian prisoners of war on their way to be exchanged for captured Russian soldiers, or video
footage showed a plane descending rapidly behind residenJal buildings, followed by huge fireball.
Officials in Kyiv have confirmed a prisoner exchange was planned for Wednesday, but that it didn't
happen. Our Russia editor Steve Rosenberg reports from Moscow. In southern Russia Today, a military
transport plane fell from the sky. Good god cried a woman who was filming on her mobile phone as a
giant fireball rose from the crash site. The wreckage of the AleuJan 76 was strewn across fields. Not
only did Russia accuse Ukraine of shooJng down the plane, it claimed that onboard were dozens of
Ukrainian prisoners of war on their way to a prisoner swap.

So they thought that a Russian military spokesman said that of the 74 people on the aircra\ 65 were
Ukrainian POWs. There were no survivors. Over it, the Russian parliament, MPs were quick to
condemn Ukraine and to criJcize those countries who've been supporJng Kyiv through the war. But
this is a war, the Kremlin started with President PuJn's so called special military operaJon.
Russia Reports Claim Missile Fragments
Found At Site Of Plane Crash

This is the global news podcast from the BBC World Service. I'm robbing brands at 1400 hours GMT
on Thursday the 25th of January and these are our main stories. Reports from Russia say missile
fragments and two black box flight recorders have been found at the site of a plane crash, which is
said to have killed 10s of Ukrainian prisoners of war. intense fighJng between Israeli forces and
Hamas militants has conJnued in southern Gaza a\er a United NaJons shelter for displaced people
was hit. Also coming up in this podcast

these all came from the BriJsh raid on Kumasi in 1874. This is a peace pipe. When a shanty kings got
together

a shanty gold the UK is to loan back Garner's looted crown jewels. But we begin this global news
podcasts with the ongoing blame game between Russia and Ukraine. More than 24 hours a\er a
Russian military plane came down near the Ukrainian border, killing all 74 people on board. Russia,
which says the plane was carrying Ukrainian prisoners of war, said Ukraine had shut it down and
called for an inquiry into President Volodymyr Zelensky. Mr. Zelensky, though for his part said there
should be an internaJonal invesJgaJon or

Trump administraJon arrives. And usually, it is obvious that the Russians are playing with the lives of
Ukrainian prisoners with the feelings of their relaJves and with the emoJons of our society, we need
to establish all the clear facts as much as possible, given that the downing of the plane occurred on
Russian territory, which is beyond our control.

Well, Ukraine has not admi`ed to shooJng down the plane, but did say that Russian aircra\ flying in
that area were considered legiJmate targets. Russia now says it's recovered to black boxes from the
crash sites which should contain crucial voice and data recordings. But whether any Russian report on
them is believed or even believable, is open to quesJon. In a moment we'll hear from our
correspondents in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv. But first, I spoke to Elisabeta Fox from BBC Russian.

But at this point, we don't have any independent confirmaJon of what happened and the only things
were 100% sure about our two. The first is that the plane definitely crashed near the Ukrainian
border yesterday, yesterday mornings. And the second is Ukraine and Russia are expected to have a
massive prisoner swap yesterday. No one's denying this. Then Russia, of course, was very quick to
blame Ukraine for shooJng down this plane and the Russian MOTD and says it was full of Ukrainian
prisoners of war and that all of them are bad now, we can't independently confirm it's true. But
yesterday Margarita, CNN editor in chief of Russia today, one of Russia's top propagandists published
a list of the soldiers who were allegedly the passengers of the spleen. And again, we don't know if it's
true, but we check more than 20 of those names and confirm that they actually belong to people
who have been menJoned, you know, in the recent months as Ukrainian prisoners of war. But again,
we don't know if that we're on board.

resisted. Also, in this podcast, the remains were very well preserved. There was bone skin, fingernails,
toenails, and kidney are located.

In a rare discovery a human skeleton daJng back more than 2000 years has been found in Northern
Ireland. President Biden has appointed the Director of the CIA William Burns to help broker a deal on
the Israeli hostages being held in Gaza. He's to meet the Prime Minister of Qatar as a top official from
Israel's intelligence service in France soon. Against this backdrop, there's another imminent deadline
for people in southern Gaza. The UN says Israel has ordered 10s of 1000s of PalesJnians sheltering in
a un compound in the city of Han units to leave by Friday evening at 5pm. local Jme. Israel's military
says it's a`acking militants in western con Eunice with tanks and airstrikes. These PalesJnians who
fled the fighJng say they're in a desperate situaJon.

We were sieng minding our own business when suddenly tanks arrived and opened fire on us. I don't
know how I managed to get out. But praise be to God. I made it this far.

The situaJon is catastrophic. There's no water, it's very hard to find food, food and water are scarce.
There are no vegetables, even the sick at the hospital can't have healthy proper meals on the
internet. AddiJonal gad people are just fleeing. There were those who were injured, some were
martyred. They are all heading towards the coast. And from there to refer. I asked our correspondent
in Jerusalem Mark Lowen. More about the Israeli order. And who's ready evacuaJon order has been
issued for that training center, which is thought to be sheltering around 30,000 people. One of the
buildings in the training center was hit by fire on Wednesday that is said to have killed at least a
dozen people le\ more than 70 people injured. Now the evacuaJon order is by Friday at 5pm local
Jme, basically ordering people to move south towards refer which is right on the southern Jp of guys
are on the border with with Egypt and is already crammed full of people thought to have about one
and a half million people sheltering there.
UN's top court rules Israel must prevent
genocide in Gaza

And Nick Qureshi, and at 14 GMT on Friday, the 26th of January. These are our main stories. The UN's
top court warns Israel It must take measures to prevent genocide in Gaza a\er a test case brought by
South Africa, America's first execuJon using suffocaJon by nitrogen gas. We speak to a journalist who
watched the convicted murderer die. The people who were in the room tonight believe that it was a
more violent execuJon than any of the lethal injecJons we've witnessed before.

Also, in this podcast plasJc polluJon, scienJsts discover that hermit crabs are increasingly seeking
shelter in our discarded waste. And ahead of the release of a new film about Bob Marley. We talked
to the actor about what it's like to play the reggae legend.

You can't mimic him you can't copy him. Reggae is a piece of music that was really to challenge
people coming together.

The UN's top court has ordered Israel to take a string of emergency measures in Gaza but stopped
short of demanding a ceasefire. Under the measures Israel has been told to do all in its power to
prevent genocide there and immediately enable more urgently needed aids to enter the territory. The
hearing at the InternaJonal Court of JusJce in the Hague is part of a case brought by South Africa
accusing Israel of commieng genocide against PalesJnians. Israel vehemently denies the accusaJon.
The court's rulings are legally binding but there is no facility to enforce them. The president of the
InternaJonal Court of JusJce judge Joni Donohue read the ruling the State of Israel shall, in
accordance with its obligaJons under the ConvenJon on the PrevenJon and Punishment of the Crime
of Genocide, in relaJon to the PalesJnians in Gaza. Take all measures within its power to prevent the
commission of all acts within the scope of ArJcle Two of the convenJon. In parJcular, a killing

deliberately inflicJng on the group condiJons of life calculated to bring about its physical destrucJon

correspondent Anna halogen is in The Hague and spoke to us just a\er the ruling was delivered. I'm
just going to step away from the steps of the court you might also be able to detect in the
