of industry. Smoke, chemicals, and wastes from factories which consist of Sulphur and nitrogen oxides are dangerous
for our health. Burning coal and oil release other gases that are harmful to human. Vehicles, especially cars, help to

One of the factors in global warming is carbon monoxide. The more carbon monoxide in the atmosphere, the
less the atmosphere is able to clean itself. The result is a warming of the atmosphere, the so-called global warming,
and possibly ozone damage.
Earlier, it was found that carbon monoxide was concentrated in the Southern Hemisphere, and could be
attributed to deforestation. Huge areas of forest and grasslands in South America and Africa have been burned,
putting carbon monoxide into the atmosphere. Recently, however, the Southern Hemisphere has been found to
be clean, while the Northern Hemisphere is more polluted than expected.
The latest research was done during the northern winter. The high levels in the Northern Hemisphere could be
because of this. In winter carbon monoxide is destroyed more slowly. There are also more fires burned in winter,
and possibly industrial processes work harder. It could also reflect the ever-increasing number of cars on the
roads. Optimists hope that the reason why the North has overtaken the South as the major area of carbon monoxide
is that at last the burning has stopped, or at least slowed down.

1. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

2. The word “damage” means ________?

in the atmosphere?

College graduates also enjoy benefits beyond increased income. A 1998 report published by the Institute
for Higher Education Policy reviews the individual benefits that college graduates enjoy, including higher
levels of saving, increased personal/professional mobility, improved quality of life for their offspring, better
consumer decision making, and more hobbies and leisure activities (Institute for Higher Education Policy,
1998). According to a report published by the Carnegie Foundation, nonmonetary individual benefits of higher
education include the tendency for postsecondary students to become more open-minded, more cultured, more
rational, more consistent, and less authoritarian; these benefits are also passed along to succeeding generations
(Rowley and Hurtado, 2002). Additionally, college attendance has been shown to "decrease prejudice, enhance
knowledge of world affairs and enhance social status" while increasing economic and job security for those
who earn bachelor’s degrees. Research has also consistently shown a positive correlation between completion
of higher education and good health, not only for oneself, but also for one’s children. In fact, "parental
schooling levels (after controlling for differences in earnings) are positively correlated with the health status of
their children" and increased schooling (and higher relative income) are correlated with lower mortality rates
for given age brackets".

The Great Wall in China is also considered one of the wonders of the world. The Great Wall started as earth

stand guard over the workers as well as to defend the northern boundaries. The tradition lasted for centuries.
Each dynasty added to the height, breadth, length, and elaborated the design mostly through forced labor.
It was during the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) that the Wall took on its present form. The brick and granite

Have you ever wondered where museums get the works and relics that they put on display? If the museum
is sponsored by the government, then the relics were probably collected under special laws that protect
historical treasures related to that country. However, not all museums are sponsored by the government.
Sometimes a private collector decides to set up a museum so that the public can view the works or relics
in his or her collection. Since the 1990s, more and more of these museums set up by private collectors
have sprung up in China. Typically, these private museums are small, but they give visitors the chance
to see works and relics not found anywhere else.
Songtang Li is one such collector who has put part of his private collection on display for the public. In
2001, Li opened his museum in an old 18th century house in Beijing. The museum displays some of the
best examples of Chinese folk art he has collected over his lifetime.
Li began collecting folk art sculptures when he was young. Thus began Li’s lifetime hobby of visiting
demolition sites and collecting pieces of sculpture or decorative architecture. Anything that he was
allowed to take away would end up in his collection. In the late 1970s, China underwent major economic
reforms. At that time, Beijing started widespread demolition and rebuilding across the city. According
to Li, more than ninety percent of the old houses and temples in Beijing have since been torn down and
replaced with modern buildings. Luckily, all of old Beijing’s architectural folk art has not been lost. Visitors to
the Songtangzhai Folk Sculpture Museum can view some of the best relics Li rescued over
the years.
