Exercise 1:
The phosgene molecule consists of a carbon atom C (Z=6), an oxygen atom O
(Z =8) and two chlorine atoms Cl (Z = 17).
1. Give the brute formula of this molecule.
2. Write the electronic structure of the C, O and Cl atoms.
3. Deduce the period and column of each atom.
4. Deduce the number of covalent bonds that these atoms must establish to obtain an
octet structure.
5. Determine the total number nt of external electrons of the molecule.
6. Determine the number nd of external doublets.
7. Establish the Lewis representation of the molecule.
8. Write the structural formula of the molecule.

Exercise 2:
Consider a homogeneous bar of length L and mass m rotating around a fixed horizontal axis
(Δ) passing through its center of gravity G. 1. A couple of forces (𝐹⃗1,𝐹⃗2) of common
intensity F = 2N and the horizontal balance of the bar is achieved using a spring with a
stiffness constant K = 20N.m-1.
Data: GC = OC =𝐿/4.
1.1. List the forces applied on the bar.
1.2. By applying the moment theorem,
calculate the intensity T of the force exerted by the spring
on the bar.
1.3. Deduce ΔL the spring elongation.
2. We modify the points of application of the torque (𝐹⃗1,𝐹⃗2) such that A becomes the point
of application of 𝐹⃗2 While keeping the same distance between the action lines and the
same direction.
2.1. Show the diagram of the assembly obtained.
2.2. Calculate, in this new case, the intensity T of the force exerted by the spring on the bar.
Conclude.
