SHADING

1. In this experiment, we will examine the effect of shading on a solar

module connected in series to three further modules.

Shade solar module 3 and observe the resultant readings on the measuring
devices.

Shade solar module 3 and observe the resultant readings on the measuring
devices.
1. What happens when solar module 3 is shaded?
2. Measure the current and voltage with the solar module unshaded.

3. Measure the current and voltage with the solar module shaded.
Connect the bypass diode for solar module 3 and repeat the measurements with
the solar module unshaded as well as shaded.
1. Measure the current and voltage with the solar module unshaded.

2. Measure the current and voltage with the solar module shaded.
CHARACTERISTIC OF A SHADED SOLAR MODULE
2. In this experiment, we will examine the response of series-connected and
parallel-connected solar modules to shading. For this purpose, we will
record and analyze the associated current/voltage and power characteristics.

To record the characteristics, proceed as described next.

1. The irradiance should remain set to its maximum value.

2. Set the potentiometer to 0 Ω (short circuit).

3. Start recording the U/I characteristic by actuating the button.

4. Slowly turn the potentiometer to its maximum resistance value.

5. Stop recording the characteristic by actuating the button.

Shade solar module G3 and record the characteristics.

Connect the bypass diodes in parallel with the two solar modules G1 and G3.
Record the characteristics. Record the characteristics again during shading of
solar module G3.
Copy the result to the placeholder provided below. For this purpose, position
the mouse over the diagram and press the right-hand mouse button (copy).

What do the recorded characteristics indicate?

Set up the experiment as indicated next.

Connect the two solar modules G1 and G2 in parallel. Do not connect their bypass
diodes yet. Record the characteristics.
Open the virtual X/Y recorder via the menu path Instruments | X/Y recorder or by
clicking on the icon below, and perform the settings shown in the adjacent table.

Shade solar module G2 and record the characteristics.

Connect the bypass diodes in parallel with the two solar modules G1 and G2. Again
record the characteristics during shading of solar module G2.

Copy the result to the placeholder provided below. For this purpose, position the
mouse over the diagram and press the right-hand mouse button (copy)
