What Is It
Music of the Romantic Period

Romantic Period was a time where artists, composers, and authors start anew apart
from the formal restraints of the Classical Period. The main goal of Romanticism is for the artists
to be free of the limitations imposed by classicism.

In 18th century, Romanticism was used to describe new ideas in painting and literature.
It was then used by musicians to express the modification in musical style. Romantic composers
aimed for a powerful expression of emotion. Music of the Romantic period is not all about love,
it can also be about negative feelings or thoughts, such as anger and hatred.

Music and Its Relation to Other Art Forms

Romantic Music in Relation to Painting

Music and art, particularly painting, have a close relationship. It affects our creative
process where music and art come about together in an environment. Colors, brightness or
darkness, smell, and sounds are some of the environmental factors that trigger varying emotions
and feelings within us.

The paintings of the Romantic Period gave more emphasis on emotion. Artists
expressed as much feeling and passion as it could be on canvas. Romantic painting can be
divided into figure and landscape works.

In music, Ludwig van Beethoven is the central figure of the Romantic period. He bridged
the music from Classical to Romantic Era. He expressed his passion and emotions through his
music. The Moonlight Sonata is a wonderful evocation of emotions.

Jean Louis Theodore Gericault was the first French master and the leader of the French
realistic school. His masterpieces were energetic, powerful, brilliantly colored, and tightly
composed.

Romantic Music in relation to Sculpture

Many art forms usually use identical descriptive terms across art disciplines. Repetition,
variety, intensity, rhythm, balance, unity, and so on are just some of the terms used for different
art forms.

Romantic Sculpture can be divided into works that concern about the human world and
those that concern the natural world. Statues could be used to tell something about a person

6
and sometimes express emotions. The sculptures’ effect in expressing emotions can be
transformed into a description associated to the language of the material used. The two leading
sculptors during Romantic period were Rude and Barye.

Nationalism was incorporated in the music of the Romantic Period. Most of the musical
compositions of the era portray literature, history, emotions, and nature.

Francois Rude was best known for his social art which aimed to inspire and capture the
interest of a broad public.

Famous artworks:

• Departure of the Volunteers

• Jeanne d’Arc
