What is -
i) hospice:
Hospice is comfort care without curative intent; the patient no longer has curative
options or has chosen not to pursue treatment because the side effects outweigh
the benefits.
ii) palliative care:
Palliative care is comfort care with or without curative intent.
Abstract:
Architectural approaches to enhance hospice and palliative care environments.
Integrating healthcare design principles, environmental psychology, and user-cen-
tered strategies, the study aims to optimize spaces, fostering holistic and compas-
sionate end-of-life experiences.
Objectives:
To study the design approach on focus of Hospices from service oriented spacial
design to experience and healing oriented.
To identify the needs of a Hospice in the context of our country's cultural background
To explore biophilic strategies to enhance the living quality of patients
Focus areas:
A hospice or palliative care contains various spaces which can be classified into
service oriented spaces
treatment oriented spaces
in patient units
In patient units :
bedrooms - single, 4 bedrooms, en-suite, isolation rooms
day room - Day accommodation will be provided for patients and their visitors, to
relax and sit away from their bedrooms. It should allow for small group
gatherings, and social activities. A television and music system should be
provided here, as should I.T. facilities for patient use.
quiet room - The quiet room will also be used as a day room as described above, but
without the television or music system. A more restful,spiritual, contemplative atmo-
sphere should prevail here.
