Topic: Constructing Characters and Developing Settings

Teacher: Mr. Roshan Nair

Grades: 6 to10

Time: 10-15 minutes

Resource: Photograph

Teacher: Good morning! Today we are going to take a look at how to build
characters and settings in order to write a narrative. The objective is to be able
to effectively outline a plot focusing on characters and setting. This session
should enable you to look at every day objects critically and understand that
everything in sight could be used as material for your narrative.

1. Take a look at this picture and list down everything you see in it.
2. Based on your list, create at least 2 characters. What are they like? Think
about their appearance, their age, their lifestyle, and their profession.
3. Based on the photograph, where is your story set?
4. Can there be more than one setting where your characters can be? (Hint:
What images do umbrellas bring to your mind?)
5. What are your characters doing now? What led them to this present
situation? What do you think is going to happen after this?
6. Take 5 minutes to answer the above questions and formulate a plan with
attention given to characters and setting.
7. Take another 5 minutes to plan a plot using your notes (points 1-6)

The session on characters and settings ends.
