Procedures and Timeline

Introduction

● This lesson is to be done after the class has completed reading the book The Giver.
● Begin the lesson by reviewing the book and some of its main characters and events. Do not just
say the review ask the students questions and have them tell you. If by the end they have not
mentioned a few of the characters, settings or events on your sheet that you are going to give
them then you can mention those and have the students tell you why they are important or
something about them.
● Create the groups of 4. Either have the children decide their groups or already have them
planned.
● Pass out the Character, Setting and Event sheet to each group
● Then hand out the Thought organizer sheet to each group
● Tell the groups that each group is going to pick two from one of the following categories either
setting, character or event then analyze the qualities about their choices.
● Write on the board some of these qualities for examples such as: spooky, happy, shadowed,
thoughtful, etc.
