Introduction

For dimensioning any Switching Network a Traffic Model is of

utmost importance. The accuracy of the Call Model leads to
determining the hardware requirement of the switching
element accurately. Based on the inputs provided by the
marketing team, this document defines a Traffic Model to
cater to Reliance’s requirements.

This Traffic Model has been generalized taking into account

both the areas: those covered and those not covered by
Reliance Wireless (CDMA) network. This aspect takes care of
traffic dispersion not only to BSNL LEX (Local exchanges),
but also the distribution between LEX and TAX (Transit
Exchanges) of BSNL.

A Traffic Model is used to determine the Traffic Distribution

from a switching element to all different entities (like E1s
towards POI, Inter MSC E1s, E1s towards Reliance’s TAX) in
the switching network.

Assumptions

Traffic generated per Wireless subscribers has been assumed

to be 100mE per subscriber. This is inclusive of bothway traffic
(incoming as well as outgoing). This has been forecasted based
on market research and trends observed in different
PSTNs/PLMNs in India.

Further, based on studies in certain circles, the following

assumptions have been also considered.

02/26/24 Wireless EWC Page 3 of 12

Reliance Infocom Interconnect Design Document

1. Approximately 20% of the total traffic generated by

Reliance Wireless subscriber will be Mobile to Mobile.
Remaining 80% of the traffic will be Mobile to PSTN. This
has been observed in major PLMNs. The exact traffic
distribution and volume depends on the ratio of existing
BSNL subscribers and Reliance’s CDMA subscribers in the
specific PLMN. However the above assumption would be
fairly accurate in defining the traffic model.

2. 85 % of the total traffic generated by Reliance Wireless

subscriber is assumed to be Intra SDCA. 12 % is expected to
be the Intra Circle (Inter SDCA) and 3% would be Inter
Circle Long Distance & Inter National. This is true for most
of the PLMNs except Delhi since in this PLMN there is only
one SDCA.

Traffic Dispersion

The Originating Traffic (Og) and the Terminating Traffic (Te) are respectively
50% of the total Traffic (Og + Te). The traffic distribution of Og & Te generated by
MS is illustrated in CDMA traffic model. The details are given below.

Og = 50 mE / Subscriber Te = 50 mE /
Subscriber

1. 85 % of the total Traffic (Og + Te) will be Intra SDCA

Traffic whereas the remaining 15% of the total Traffic (Og
+ Te) will be Inter SDCA Traffic.

2. Out of the 85% Intra SDCA Traffic, 80% of this Traffic i. e.

17% of the total (Og + Te) Traffic will be Mobile to Mobile
(I_msc) traffic. In addition Inter SDCA, which is 1 % of (Og
+ Te) would also be Mobile to Mobile (I_msc).

I_msc = 17% of (Og + Te) +1% of (Og + Te) = 18% of

(Og + Te)
= 18 mE

3. 80% of total Intra SDCA Traffic i. e. 68% of the total (Og +

Te) Traffic will be Mobile to PSTN (OM-P + IP-M) traffic.

OM-P + IP-M = 68% of (Og + Te) = 68 mE

OM-P / IP-M = 34 mE

4. 15% of the total Traffic (Og + Te), which is Inter SDCA

Traffic can be divided into 2 portions. 80% of this traffic i.
e. 12% of the Total Traffic (Og + Te), would be Intra Circle

02/26/24 Wireless EWC Page 7 of 12

Reliance Infocom Interconnect Design Document

(Inter SDCA) and the remaining 3% is Long Distance (OLD +

ILD).

OLD + ILD = 3% of (Og + Te) = 3 mE

OLD / ILD = 1.5 mE

5. The Inter SDCA (Inter MSC if applicable) is 12% (Og + Te)

can be further divided into 2 parts. One is 1.5 % of (Og +
Te) which is Mobile to Mobile between MSC’s ( MMI +
MMo ).

MMI + MMo = 1.5% of (Og + Te) = 1.5 mE

MMI / MMO = 0.75 mE

The other part would be Mobile to PSTN between the two

MSCs. This would be 5.5% of (Og + Te). The incoming
portion of this traffic (MMIM-P ) , which is inter MSC traffic
from the other MSC of the same circle would actually be
transit traffic (Tr) for the MSC in consideration. This traffic
would ultimately be terminated at the POI of the Lex (OTr).
The Incoming portion of this traffic (ITr) would be actually
delivered in “this MSC” from the Tax.

MMIM-P + MMOM-P = 5.5 % of (Og + Te) = 5.5 mE

MMIM-P / MMOM-P = 2.75 mE = Tr = OTr = ITr

6. Inter SDCA, Intra MSC, Mobile to PSTN traffic (ISIM-P +

ISOM-P) is expected to be 4% of (Og + Te). Incase Reliance
Wireless CDMA network covers the entire circle then this
traffic would terminate in the Lex else it would be
distributed between Lex and Tax. The distribution would be
proportional to the Covered Area to Non Covered Area.
Assuming that the entire circle is covered by Reliance
Wireless CDMA network then all the outgoing traffic would
be terminated in the Lex. On the other hand all incoming
traffic would be originated from the Tax.

ISIP-M + ISOM-P = 4% of (Og + Te) = 4 mE

ISOM-P / ISIP-M = 2 mE
