TEXTO COMPLETO
The Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) on Thursday recognized Yessica Yana, a Bolivian
indigenous woman and agronomist who has managed to increase agricultural yields and make more efficient use of
water in the Altiplano of her country by using a drone.
IICA honored Yana with the Leaders of Rurality of the Americas Award for her promotion of new technologies and
for fostering an inclusive digital world in which innovation and technology serve to reduce gender gaps and
contribute to greater equality and empowerment of women and girls.
Drone innovation: greater efficiency in agriculture
"With the drone, the work is much faster than with traditional spraying that is done with backpacks. It saves time,
especially for women, who are usually responsible for the crops in addition to caring for the children. In addition,
water consumption, which is scarce in the Altiplano, is reduced by half," the agronomist explained.
Yana said that women can be major players in the transformations that are occurring in agriculture thanks to
technology. Therefore, it is necessary to train them in topics such as innovation, agricultural development, money
management, business and animal health care, among others.
Encouraging women to venture into agricultural technology.
"Sometimes out of fear we miss out on interesting things. That's why I would ask women to be encouraged.
Technology in agriculture is important and it is not so difficult. To those who want to study, I would say that it is never
too late to start. I had never imagined in my life that I was going to study agronomy and much less that I was going
to operate a drone. It is normal to feel a little fear, but women can do it," said the engineer.
Leaders of Rurality Award: guaranteeing food security
The Leaders of Rurality Award is a recognition for those who play a fundamental role in guaranteeing food and
nutritional security, as well as guardians of the planet's biodiversity through production in all circumstances.
