abacus
An instrument for calculating.

acute angle
An acute angle is an angle less than 90 which can appear sharp.

acute angle

add
To put numbers together. For example, 3 + 4 = 7.

addend
Any number which is added to obtain the sum. For example, 3 + 7 + 8 = 18
(addends) (sum)

addition
The act of adding ( + ).

adjacent
Next to. Adjacent sides of a triangle have a common vertex. AB and BC are adjacent because they have a common vertex, B.
a

Algebra
Part of Mathematics that involves reasoning by the use of symbols to discover unknown values. For example, x + 10 = 26, x=16.

algorithm
The setting out of mathematical problem in a certain way. For example, 457 + 94 --------989 - 57 --------659 x 35 ---------

a.m.
ante meridiem (the morning). Any time from midnight to noon.

10

analogue clock
A clock face with numbers 1 to 12 and two hands.

11

angle
The amount of turn between two lines around a common point. A figure made of two rays with a common end point.
ray amount of turn vertex ray

12

annual
An event that happens once every year.

13

anti-clockwise
The opposite direction to the normal movement of a clock.

14

apex
The opposite direction to the normal movement of a clock.
apex

15

approximation
To make an estimate of an amount. For example, 896 x 6 can be rounded to 900 x 6 to give an approximation of about 5400.

16

arc
A section of a curve with two end points.
arc

17

area
The surface covered by any 2D shape. For example, Area = 12 m
4m

3m

Area can be measured in cm, m, hectares, km.

18

arm
A term often used to describe the rays that form an angle.

19

ascending order
To replace numbers in increasing order from the smallest to the largest. For example, 21, 18, 5, 25, 11, 2 15 becomes 2, 5, 11, 15, 18 21, 25.

20

attribute
Any characteristics that can be attributed to a shape when classifying. For example, shapes can be classified according to size, colour, shape, thickness, number of sides.

21

average
The total of a series of numbers divided by the amount of numbers in the group. For example, to find the average of 16, 23, 14, 35, 12, add 16 + 23 + 14 + 35 + 12 and divided by 5 (number of scores). The average is 20.

22

axis
A line which divides a shape in half.
Example 1: Example 2. The vertical and horizontal axes of a graph.. vertical axis

horizontal axis

23

axes of symmetry
Also referred to as line of symmetry. The imaginary lines that when a shape is folded along its both sides will match.
