2 PRIOR TO INSTALLATION 6
10 APPENDIX 23
Make sure that the router is accessible to authorized personnel only. We recommend setting up the
router in a lockable room or a rack. The router package includes a Euro power cable (EU), a NEMA
power cable (USA, Canada, etc.) and a china power cable. In other countries, you will have to provide
the cable separately. Observe the maximum cable lengths (listed in Appendix D).
You will need an ADSL/VDSL connection/cable access from your local telecommunication service
provider for a broadband connection. Since the Cisco C886VA router has an integrated ADSL/VDSL
modem, you will not need an external modem.
You must conclude an ADSL/VDSL contract with a local telecommunications service provider.
This process varies widely among providers, both on a national and an international scale. However,
the following general guidelines may be helpful:
For the configuration of the router, you have to know the following parameters of your DSL connection:
You can also connect to the internet using a direct LAN connection via the router's WAN interface.
In this case, you have to connect the WAN interface to a further segment of the local network and ask
the IT support personnel for a second IP address. This IP address must either be a public IP address
(Internet-routable address enabled for sending and receiving data from the Internet) or a private IP
address. In the case of a private IP address, the following ports and IP protocols must be forwarded
from the corresponding public IP address.
∂ TCP 22 (SSH)
∂ UDP 500 (isakmp)
∂ UDP 4500 (isakmp/nat-traversal)
∂ IP 50 (ESP)
∂ IP 51 (AH)
Please consult the responsible IT department to ensure that this is possible. If you require any
assistance in explaining the requirements to the IT department, please contact SRS CV Support Desk.
Step 1 Connect the supplied power cable (AC) to the corresponding connector for the external
power supply (IEC 60320-13) and put the low voltage connector for the router power
supply into the 12V DC connection socket on the rear panel of the router (Fig. 1).
Step 2 Plug the other end of the power cable into a power outlet. The router has an "ON/OFF"
switch.
Step 3 Check the OK LED on the front of the router; it should flash during the boot process and
stay lit when the router is ready for operation. (Fig. 3)
Figure 1: Rear panel of the router with external power supply; the 12V lead is secured to
prevent accidental detachment.
Lights up when the router is supplied with power, switched on and working
correctly. This can take up to 45 seconds after powering up the router.
Step 1 Connect one end of the Ethernet cable to one port of the 5-port FE LAN 0-2/GE LAN 0-1
switch (see Fig. 4).
Step 2 Plug the other end of the cable into one of the ports on the 10|100|1000 BaseTX hub,
switch or network connection on the wall or into the RJ45 input on the network card (NIC)
of your server or workstation.
Step 3 Check the LEDs (see Chapter 10)
Step 1 Connect one end of the yellow RJ-45 to RJ-45 cable to the port on your xDSL modem or
to the local IT infrastructure (switch / network socket).
Step 2 Connect the other end of the cable to the WAN port (GE2) on the router (fig. 5).
Step 3 Check the following LEDs: (fig. 6)
Step 1 Plug one end of the cable into the WAN (VDSL/ADSL overPOTS) port of the router (fig.7).
Step 2 Plug the other end of the cable into the wall jack or splitter.
Step 3 Check the following LEDs (Fig. 8).
Explanation:
DSL ACT Lights up = DSL WAN Interface is up
Blinking = Data transfer on the WAN DSL interface
Fast blinking = massive data transfer on the WAN DSL interface
Off = DSL WAN Interface is down
DSL LINK On = router is set up for GE WAN mode
Blinking = no SYNC via DSL or no cable connected
Off = Router is set up for DSL mode
Step 1 Connect the blue cable with the RJ-45 connector to the console port on the router (see Fig.
9).
Step 2 Connect the other end of the light blue cable to the DB-9 connector of a terminal or PC.
Please have the required provider data ready before starting the program. You can use the checklist
provided in Appendix C.
Prerequisite:
Since the installer will update/install a few components in your Windows folder, you need
administrator rights on your PC.
If you don't have those rights, you need to contact your system administrator, who has to
install the software and give you write-access to the folder where the software is to be
installed.
In order to install the software, please start setup.exe from the supplied CD; the program will
then be installed in the directory "C:\Program Files (x86)\Siemens\SRS.RSW\" by default.
Switch the router on and wait for it to boot up. This process will take several minutes.
Now start the program SRS_RSW.exe from the installation folder.
The Router Setup Wizard will then be started with a welcome screen.

Step 1
Please select the COM port that you connected the router to via the console and press F5.
Make sure that the required Com port is not used by another program (hyper terminal, tera
term or the like, see fig. 11).
Figure 11
Step 2
Click ‘Start configuration’ in order to start the search for a supported device on the serial port
you defined in step 1. If you receive a message that no router was found, check the cable
connection and/or wait a few seconds before trying again. If a router is found, its serial number
will be displayed.
Figure 12
Verify the serial number displayed with that of the router and confirm with OK if they are
identical.

The second SSH port is set to 2222 by default. If a different SSH port needs to be selected,
it has to be entered (see fig. 14 below).

A static address should be preferred in general.
If you select the integrated VDSL modem as WAN port, you now need to enter the PPP user
data assigned by the ISP.

A static address should be preferred in general.
Broadband via Static IP Address: The static address which has been assigned by your ISP (or
by the local IT department) is specified here. The gateway address is absolutely essential
here.

Step 8
The selection made in Step 8 depends on the selected specifications in Step 3.
Broadband via DHCP IP Address: You must provide the hardware address (also known as
physical or MAC address) to the ISP / local IT department in order to enable you to configure
the static DHCP assignment.

Step 9
The device is now configured. You can monitor the configuration process. The configuration
may take up to 10 minutes, depending on the previous selections you made. The main reason
for this is the generation of encoding keys and installation of certificates.
End If you receive the message “Configuration successfully finished” appears, the basic
configuration of the router has been successfully completed and you can close the Wizard.
If the configuration is unsuccessful, you will see an error message; the information given
should help you to retry the configuration process.
Please contact the Siemens RTSC if you cannot resolve a problem and need support.
Please provide the setup log for further analysis. You can find it in the folder where the
software was installed (usually c:\Program Files (x86)\SRS_WSW\[Routername].log)
Please send a checklist with all systems and router information that is needed for
configuration to the Siemens RTSC, unless the project manager has already done so.
Thank you.
The final configuration includes the registration of the end systems (appliances) via the
Remote Diagnostics Server of Smart Remote Services.
