The skull has been rendered using black charcoal and white paint, drawing upon on a wild and
unpredictable background created using coloured wash on sugar paper, with white paint marks made
using the edge of a piece of card. I used details from the collages mentioned, fabric, image maker,
photocopies, needle and colored thread, copper embossing foil, a biro pen, zippers, fibre mesh,
watercolors, acrylics, hot glue, PVA glue and a glue stick. Using white charcoal on a black acrylic
ground, graphite pencil on textured paper and Indian ink and white paint on an Indian ink wash,
Nikau was able to work without the distraction of colour, focusing solely on replicating form and
tone. I of course had to sacrifice massive amounts of sleep, and so the world of painting sort of
became my dream world, and all those beautiful things around which I no longer had much time to
indulge in, became the substance of my dreaming, and thus led to the growth, refinement and
completion of my Coursework project. My teacher allowed me the necessary freedom to pick my
subject matter, and this facilitated my liberal exploration of ideas.
