I was greatly inspired and guided by my independent reading book of the semester,
Atomic Habits by James Clear. I chose to read this book because I rely greatly on my habits due
to my complex schedule. Without such habits I would not be able to succeed in many aspects of
my life. This book was highly recommended by the internet, and for good reason, I recommend
Habits are formed based on identity, environment, and cues. An example from the book
was if one preferred to be a successful person, they would act and construct themselves as they
believed a “successful” person would. For me, this means that a good student would be ahead of
their assignments, thus I organize my life in a planner which I depend on to remain organized,
which allows me to keep good grades. To be a successful lawyer/ university student in my future,
I must also design my environment so I might operate to accommodate the habits I wish to
uphold. A process I use to incorporate habit cues in my life is alarms and habit stacking. For
example, in the morning I set an alarm which reminds me to pray, and after I pray I stack said
habit to do my scripture study. I realized in reading this book that the habits I had previously
constructed were based off of these principles without my knowledge. Nomatter, understanding
the science behind this process has allowed me to replicate these positive habits, and reassured
me that I am on the correct path. There is always room for improvement, and these academic and
spiritual habits that I uphold allow me to live a prosperous and successful teenage life. When I
enter the workforce, I will implicate the strategies I use now to remain successful and content
with my life. I cherish the lessons I have learned in reading this book and experiencing the
benefits thereof. I recommend that all read this book and identify the outcomes their habits will
create, and alter them to ensure that they assume the identity they wish to obtain.
