IELTS Writing Opinion Sample Question and Model Essay

Question: Some people argue that capital punishment is good for a country. To what extent do you
agree or disagree?

Model Essay

Topic sentences are in bold.

Explanations and details are in red.
Examples are in blue.

Introduction:

Some people believe that the death penalty can benefit a nation. I completely agree with this opinion, as
the death penalty can positively impact a country through lowering both crime and tax rates. (33 words)

Paragraph 1:

Establishing the death penalty could effectively decrease crime rates in society. The most compelling
reason for the death penalty's positive contribution to society, is that it is an effective deterrent to
serious crime. For example, people who are thinking of murder or committing violent acts will think
twice before doing so, and dangerous criminals who have undergone the death penalty would never be
able to reoffend. As a result of this policy, crime rate would go down. (77 words)

Paragraph 2:

Additionally, the death penalty could lower taxes for citizens. With this policy, the government would be
able to spend less money on keeping the criminal in prison. If the criminal is jailed for many years or for
life, the government would need to pay for the enormous expenses involved such as the cost of food for
the prisoners and the salaries for the prison officers. However, with the death sentence, the prisoner
will spend less time in prison and this would reduce the cost of imprisonment substantially. (87 words)

Conclusion:

In conclusion, I wholeheartedly agree with the opinion that sentencing serious criminals to death is
beneficial for countries. This is because of its deterrent effect, its ability to save the government a lot of
money and the fact that we can keep dangerous criminals out of society forever. Given this situation, it
is recommended that governments around the world should think about implementing this form of
punishment. (67 words)

How to Identify IELTS Writing Discussion Question Types

the two views will be in separate sentences connected by a transition word such as "however"
to indicate that the two views contrast. Your task is to write a discursive essay, contrasting both
sides of the issue and presenting your own view. Let's look at an example of this.

Obtaining a university degree is believed by some to be the best way to guarantee future

IELTS Writing Discussion Sample Question and Model Essay

Question: Some people think that a sense of competition in children should be encouraged.
Others believe that children who are taught to co-operate rather than compete become more
useful adults. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Model Essay
Topic sentences are in bold.
Explanations and details are in red.
Examples are in blue.
Opinions are in green .

Introduction:

While some people argue that we should emphasize the importance of competition when
teaching children, others take the view that focusing on cooperation is more important.
In my
opinion, it is better for children to be taught to cooperate. (39 words)

Paragraph 1:

On one side of the argument, there are people who hold the opinion that encouraging
competitiveness in children will yield better results. The most compelling reason for
believing this is that competitiveness prepares them for life in the real world. When students
grow up, for example, they will need to compete with other students for a place in university.
However, I strongly believe that winning is not everything. A society focused solely on winning
and competing ignores other important traits like compassion and generosity. (84 words)

Paragraph 2:

Despite these aforementioned views, other people believe that instilling a sense of
cooperation in children will prove to be more beneficial for society as a whole. In society
and work, cooperation and teamwork are both often required. For instance, a company will only
achieve its overall goal if all parts work together and complement each other. Consequently, I
believe that cooperation is an extremely important value, and has more value over competition.
Children who learn that winning against another is not the most important thing will be more
willing to work together towards achieving their goals. (96 words)

Conclusion:

All in all, there is a disagreement in society regarding the effects of competition on

children. I strongly reckon that children should be taught compassion and core values, as these
will have better long-term effects on society. (37 words)

How to Identify IELTS Writing Advantage & Disadvantage Question Types

Whenever you see a question that asks you to discuss the positive and negative aspects of a situation
and give your opinion regarding the matter, you know you're dealing with a Advantage & Disadvantage
question type. Let's look at an example of this.

As a result of tourism and globalization, English has become the most widely spoken language in the
world. Some people think this will lead to English becoming the only “global language”. What are the
advantages and disadvantages to having one global language? Do you believe that it could have a
positive or negative effect on society?

As you can see, this question is asking you to describe the advantages and disadvantags to having one
global language and your opinion on whether it could have a positve or negative effect on society. So, it
is is a Advantage & Disadvantage question type.

Now to do well on this question type, it is essential to learn how to use the words "advantage" and
"disadvantage" correctly. The videos below teach you how to use the words "advantage" and
"disadvantage" with proper prepositions and common collocations.

IELTS Writing Task 2 Essay Structure - Advantage and Disadvantage

There are three main essay structures for this question type. In order to fully understand the various
question types, we will look at examples of each along with the specific outline:

Question 1: In some countries young people are encouraged to work or travel for a year between
finishing high school and starting university studies. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages for young
people who decided to do this.

Simple structure (Outline A):

In this case, the question asks you to simply discuss both advantages and disadvantages; that’s all you
have to describe in this case. You do not need to discuss your opinion. This is the most simple question
for the Advantages and Disadvantages question type, and you will need to use a simple structure. Let’s
call this Outline A. It looks like this:

Introduction
Advantages (1&2)

Disadvantages (1&2)

Conclusion

Question 2: In some countries young people are encouraged to work or travel for a year between
finishing high school and starting university studies. Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages for
young people who decide to do this?

Opinion Version (Outline B):

While the question is similar to Question 1, you would need to take a different approach. This question
is not asking you to simply list off the advantages and disadvantages, nor is it asking you to say whether
there are more advantages. This question is asking you whether or not the advantages outweigh the
disadvantages. Therefore, you will need to discuss your opinion and write about the importance (or
unimportance) of the advantages.

First off, you will need to decide which side is stronger for you to write about. In other words, you will
need to decide if it is easier for you to write about how the advantages outweigh the disadvantages, or
vice versa. This is where your own opinions come into play and depend on the topic. In this case, if you
are more comfortable writing about how the advantages outweigh the disadvantages, stick with that,
even if you personally do not agree with the topic.

After you decide, this the structure you would need to use:

Introduction

Stronger Side

Weaker Side

Conclusion

Question 3: Many young people are encouraged to work or travel for a year between finishing high
school and starting university. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages and give your own opinion.

Discussion Opinion (Outline C):

This third question is a combination of Question 1 and Question 2, as it requiresyou to discuss the
advantages and disadvantages while also giving your opinion. Keep in mind that your paragraphs may
need to be a bit shorter than usual, since you have to add three different main paragraphs in your essay.
In this case, you would want to combine both outlines for the following:

Introduction

Advantages (1&2)

Disadvantages (1&2)

Opinion

Conclusion
Now, let’s take a closer look at how to plan each paragraph.

We will use Outline B from the previous section, as it tends to be the most unique and most common
question type of the Advantages and Disadvantages type essay.

Introduction – In general, you will need two sentences for this paragraph. Since this is the first
paragraph of your essay, you should paraphrase the question that was given to you. In other words,
rewrite the question in your own words using synonyms. The second sentence will introduce the specific
topics that you plan to discuss in your main body paragraphs. Therefore, your introduction paragraph
should look like:

Rewritten Question – This will be a paraphrased version of the question.

Thesis Statement – This will be your opinion – state which outweighs the other.

Stronger Side – This paragraph should be about 4-5 sentences long. In this paragraph, you will describe
why a specific side is stronger by using explanations, details, or examples. Since this is your main
argument, it will be longer than the following paragraph (Weaker Side), because you are using two
examples. The paragraph should look like this:

Topic Sentence – This will introduce the stronger side.

First Explanation of Stronger Side

Example of Stronger Side

Second Explanation of Stronger Side

Example of Stronger Side

Weaker Side - This paragraph should be about 4-5 sentences long. In this paragraph, you will describe
why this side is weaker with explanations, details, or examples. This paragraph is shorter than the
preceding paragraph (Stronger Side) because it is not your main argument, and you will only use one
example for the explanation. The paragraph should look like this:

Topic Sentence – This will introduce the weaker side.

Explanation of Weaker Side

Example of Weaker Side

Conclusion – This paragraph will wrap everything up, and it is not the time to add any new information
into your essay. This paragraph should be around 3-4 sentences, and include the following information:

Summary of the Main Points

Restate Your Position

In short, here is what the final Paragraph Planner would look like for Outline B:

I. Introduction
A. Rewritten Question (1 sentence)
B. Thesis Statement (1 sentence)
II. Stronger Side
A. Topic Sentence (1 sentence)
B. First Explanation of Stronger Side (1 sentence)
C. Example of Stronger Side 1 (1 sentence)
D. Second Explanation of Stronger Side (1 sentence)
E. Example of Stronger Side 2 (1 sentence)
III. Weaker Side
A. Topic Sentence (1 sentence)
B. Explanation of Weaker Side (1-2 sentences)
C. Example of Weaker Side (1-2 sentences)
IV. Conclusion
A. Summary of the Main Points (1-2 sentences)
B. Restate Your Position (1-2 sentences)

Now we’ve learned the paragraph outline, let’s look at an example. For our example, we will use the
following question:

IELTS Writing Cause and Effect Sample Question and Model Essay

Some experts believe that it is better for children to begin learning a foreign language at primary school
rather than secondary school. Do the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages?

Model Essay

Topic sentences are in bold.

Explanations and details are in red.
Examples are in blue.

Introduction:

Traditionally, children have begun studying foreign languages at later stages in their educational careers,
but some believe that it could be beneficial to introduce them earlier. While there are both advantages
and disadvantages associated with this topic, the positive aspects take precedence over the drawbacks.
(45 words)

Paragraph 1:

Young children are better able to learn languages for a variety of factors. First off, studies show that
young children pick up languages better than teenagers. The younger brains are, the more they are able
to retain information in the long-term. It has also been proven that young brains absorb material at a
faster rate. Additionally, implementing language lessons in primary schools would allow for more
flexibility within the school system. Younger children will be able to engage with the material more
frequently through shorter sessions, thus maintaining their enthusiasm and progress. (92 words)
Paragraph 2:

However, there are some disadvantages when it comes to learning languages at an earlier age. Primary
teachers may not be qualified to provide lessons in foreign languages, resulting in inadequate teaching.
This could demotivate younger students and give them a negative experience in language learning.
Further, school districts may not be able to carry on foreign language teaching from primary to middle
schools. In this case, students would not only lose their progress, but they would also be demotivated
due to the lack of consistency throughout their educational careers. However, these issues can be
effectively addressed through consistent support in the school district, and pose only a minor threat to
the advantages. (112 words)

Conclusion:

How to Identify IELTS Writing Problem & Solution Question Types

Whenever you see a question that askes you to describe a problem or the causes of the problem, and
describe some solutions to the problem, you know you're dealing with a Problem & Solution question
type. Let's look at an example of this.

Many inhabited areas of the world have been affected by severe flooding in recent years. What are
some of the causes of this phenomenon? What can be done to prevent if from happening?

Now let's look at how to structure your essay for a Problem and Solution question.

IELTS Writing Task 2 Essay Structure - Problem & Solution

There are three types of outlines that are frequently used for Problem and Solution essays.

Outlines A and C can both be used for questions that involve more than one problem and more than one
solution. Sometimes, however, Outline B is the only option if the question presents two different types
of solutions to one problem (we will examine this below).

Outline A Outline B Outline C

Introduction Introduction Introduction

Problems (1&2) Problem Problems (1&2)

Solutions (1&2) Solution1 Solution 1

Conclusion Solution 2 Solution 2

Conclusion Conclusion

The difference between Outline A and Outline C lies in how confident you feel based on the topic. If you
can write more about solutions (or if the question emphasizes the solutions), you should choose Outline
C, as it gives you one paragraph for each solution. In terms of scoring, all three of these examples would
be considered as a cohesive and logical process to use, depending on the question at hand.
Let's look at some examples of question types that call for these different outlines.

Question 1: What problems do children face in the age of social media? What should be done to address
or solve these various concerns?

In this case, you must think of both problems and solutions. Depending on your interest in the topic, you
could use either Outline A or Outline C. It is important to note that Outline B would not work in this
case, since you need to think of more than one problem.

Question 2: Traffic congestion is becoming a major problem for global cities. Analyze and present some
measures that could be taken to reduce traffic in these cities.

In this case, the problem is clear: "traffic". You would not need to think of another problem besides
traffic, and the question explicitly asks that you think of "some measures" (or, in other words, solutions).
In this case, Outline B would be the best option as it includes one problem and two solutions.

Question 3: Explain some of the ways in which humans are damaging the environment. What can
governments do to address these problems? What can individual people do?

In this case, the question has already presented two different parts of both the problem and the
solution. Thus, it would be best to use Outline C, and devote two different paragraphs to the two
solutions (one paragraph for what governments can do, and one paragraph for what individual people
can do).

To conclude, it is rare for a question to feature many different problems while asking for only one
solution. Therefore, it is best to prepare for questions that will feature one problem and ask for various
solutions.

Unless the question states otherwise, you will most likely want to include two problems and two
solutions. Why? Using just one problem and solution is most likely not going to be substantial enough
for 250 words, and using more than two would be superfluous. Additionally, it is extremely important
that each problem has its own solution. In other words, if you mention two problems, be sure to
mention two solutions to those problems.

Now, let's take a closer look at how to plan each paragraph.

We will use Outline C from the previous section, as it tends to be the most complicated and most
common question type of the Problem and Solution type essay. Below, we will detail how each
paragraph should be written.

Introduction - In general, you will need two sentences for this paragraph. Since this is the first paragraph
of your essay, you should paraphrase the question that was given to you. In other words, rewrite the
question in your own words using synonyms. This will help you in a few ways. First, it will guarantee that
your essay is on target and following the theme given to you in the question. Secondly, it will give you a
chance to show the examiners that you have a wide range of vocabulary and can call upon synonyms
when necessary. The second sentence will introduce the specific topics that you plan to discuss in your
main body paragraphs. Therefore, your introduction paragraph should look like:

Rewritten Question
Introduction of Specific Topics

Problems 1 & 2 - This paragraph should be about 4-5 sentences long. In this paragraph, you will describe
the specific problems with explanations, details, or examples. The paragraph should look like this:

Topic Sentence - This will introduce the problem(s)

Explanation/Detail of Problem 1

Example of Problem 1

Explanation/Detail of Problem 2

Example of Problem 2

Solution 1 - This paragraph should be about 4-5 sentences long. In this paragraph, you will describe the
specific solutions with explanations, details, or examples. Keep in mind that you can use up to two
sentences for the explanation and detail of the solution, and two sentences for the example of the
solution. The paragraph should look like this:

Topic Sentence - This will introduce the solution(s)

Explanation/Detail of Solution 1

Example of Solution 1

Solution 2 - This paragraph should be about 4-5 sentences long.

Explanation/Detail of Solution 2

Example of Solution 2

Conclusion - This paragraph will wrap everything up, and it is not the time to add any new information
into your essay. This paragraph should be around 3-4 sentences, and include the following information:

Summary of the Main Points (2 sentences)

Something Important about this Topic (1-2 sentences)

In short, here is what the final Paragraph Planner would look like for Outline C:

I. Introduction
A. Rewritten Question (1 sentence)
B. Introduction of Specific Topics (1 sentence)
II. Problems 1 & 2
A. Topic Sentence (1 sentence)

IELTS Writing Problem and Solution Sample Question and Model Essay

Question: In the developed world, the average life expectancy is increasing. What problems will this
cause for individuals and society? Suggest some measures that could be taken to reduce the impact of
ageing populations.

Model Essay

Topic sentences are in bold.

Explanations and details are in red.
Examples are in blue.

Introduction:

People in industrialized nations can expect to live longer than ever before. Although there will be some
negative consequences associated with this shift, societies can take steps to diminish these effects. (31
words)

Paragraph 1:

The ageing population will bring about rising costs to society. As citizens age and grow weaker, society’s
tax burden increases. If a large amount of the population is elderly and retired, pensions costs and taxes
will increase, thus creating a burden for younger tax-paying individuals. Additionally, older members of
society will require more specialized care as their health worsens, which will bring about higher medical
costs due to increased demand. (70 words)

Paragraph 2:
However, there are some steps that both the government and individuals can take to mitigate these
problems. Firstly, an increase in the retirement age would offset increasing costs from older generations.
If people are able to retire later, the age for receiving a government-funded state pension would rise.
Additionally, this extra time would allow the ageing population to pass on knowledge and help train
younger workers in their respective fields. (70 words)

Paragraph 3:

Promoting programs and initiatives in the health care industry could also alleviate potential risks from
the aforementioned problems. If the healthcare industry prepares for the increase in the ageing
population, the potential problem of higher taxes could be avoided. For example, by promoting
advances in medical programs, elderly people may be able to live with better health standards and
contribute to society for a longer period of time. These medical advances would also help future
generations as they get older. (81 words)

Conclusion:

Various measures can be taken in order to offset potential problems from the ageing population. It is
crucial that both individuals and governments work together in this venture. (28 words)

Total Word Count: 280 words

Note: It is normal for this specific essay to be longer than 250 words, since there are different proposed
solutions. Given the topic and question type, 30 words over the limit would definitely not count against
you.

IELTS Writing Task 2 Essay Structure - Cause and Effect

Introduction Introduction Introduction

Causes (1&2) Causes 1 Causes (1&2)

Effects (1&2) Cause 2 Effect 1

Conclusion Effects (1&2) Effect 2

examples would be considered as a cohesive and logical process to use. Also, it is extremely important
that each cause has its own effect. In other words, if you mention two causes, be sure to mention two
corresponding effects.

Let’s take a closer look at how each paragraph should be written in Outline A.

Introduction – In general, you will need two sentences for this paragraph. Since this is the first
paragraph of your essay, you should paraphrase the question that was given to you. In other words,

IELTS Writing Cause and Effect Sample Question and Model Essay

Question: Even though governments have worked hard to bring about improvements in the healthcare
system, the overall standard of physical health in developed countries is decreasing. What are the
potential reasons for this, and what are some of the long-term effects?

Model Essay

Topic sentences are in bold.

Explanations and details are in red.
Examples are in blue.

Introduction:

Health problems including heart disease, obesity, and diabetes are becoming more widespread in
developed countries. There are several reasons contributing to this problem, as well as potentially
drastic long-term effects. (30 words)

Paragraph 1:

Lifestyle choices are important and major causes of poor health in developed countries. These days, it is
perhaps easier and cheaper to follow an unhealthy diet. For example, the recent boom in fast food
restaurants and chains has enticed people to eat at these establishments rather than cooking healthy
meals at home. Stress is another factor that has contributed to poor health. The fast-paced corporate
culture and competitive work atmosphere make for a difficult work-life balance, resulting in little to no
time for eating healthy or taking care of oneself. (90 words)

Paragraph 2:

These lifestyle choices will have drastic long-term effects. If generations continue to partake in these
unhealthy habits, they will continue on for generations to come. For instance, parents who have
diabetes or are prone to obesity have a higher chance of passing these conditions on to their children,
and so on. Consequently, these health problems could result in a higher cost of living. Due to increased
demand for services, it is only natural that the health care industry would charge higher prices to its
clients, resulting in higher costs. (89 words)

Conclusion:

Poor lifestyle choices, ranging from unhealthy diets and higher stress, have certainly contributed to the
decrease in health standards. If not properly taken care of, these problems could cause harmful long-
term effects to future generations in terms of disease and a higher cost of living. (45 words)

[Practice and View Model Answer]

Question 10: Levels of youth crime are increasing rapidly in most cities around the world. What are the
reasons for this, and suggest some solutions?
[Practice and View Model Answer]

Crime rate has been on the rise in the world. This has developed a contentious argument that, death
penalty will benefit nations. I totally agree with this opinion of ending the life of violent criminals as this
be a deterrent and also lead to a reduction of tax for citizens.

First of all, killing hard criminals will care others planning on committing serious crimes. That is to say
that, individuals who are in the process of masterminding dangerous offenses upon hearing of the
execution of similar crime offenders will have a second taught. In other words, there will be some
hesitation with continuing such an activity that will lead to an offence. To illustrate, a survey performed
by the New York Police Department in 2001 revealed that, 70% of hard criminals confessed that they
would have had a change of mind if a sentence to death was in existence.

In addition, there will be a reduction of tax burden on citizens. The reason is that, since government
finances the prisons departments, salaries of prisons officers, upkeep of prisoners with the tax payer’s
money, the fewer prisoners exist in our prisons, the less money the country will expend on keeping
them. This in turn will lead to the government having unused revenue leading to tax cuts for citizens. For
example, the university of Kent published in 1994 the results of its study about tax reduction in 50
countries revealing that it is likely to reduce taxes in countries with less crime as in the case of the
Netherlands.

In conclusion, I completely support the termination of the life of hard criminals as this leads to deterring
criminals and a reduction in taxes. Therefore, it is recommended that countries should reconsider the
practice of killing deadly criminals.
