Lesson 2 – Identity

The Beginning.
The Bible speaks of the creation of humanity as a – “direct act of God.”
● God Created mankind.
o Gen 2:7 (NLT) Then the Lord God formed the man from the dust of the
ground. He breathed the breath of life into the man’s nostrils, and the man
became a living person.
● We were created in God’s image
o Gen 1:27 (NLT) So God created human beings in His own image. In the
image of God He created them; male and female.
● God was pleased with what He created.
o Gen 1:31 (NLT) Then God looked over all He had made, and He saw that it
was very good!

Why was I created.

We were created for God's pleasure. The motivation behind this was His incredible love.
Having been created in His image, we have the capacity to -
● Know Him – John 17:3 (NLT) And this is the way to have eternal life—to know you,
the only true God, and Jesus Christ, the one you sent to earth.
● Love Him – Mark 12:30 (NLT) And you must love the LORD your God with all your
heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength. Col 3:17 (TPT) Let every
activity of your lives and every word that comes from your lips be drenched with the
beauty of our Lord Jesus, the Anointed One. And bring your constant praise to God
the Father because of what Christ has done for you!
● Serve Him – Eph 2:10 (NIV) For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to
do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
● Be Loved - Eph 3:18-19 (NLT) And may you have the power to understand, as all
God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep His love is.
19
May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully.
Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes
from God.
● Love others – John 15:12 (TPT) “So this is my command: Love each other deeply,
as much as I have loved you.

Who am I.
The bible clearly teaches that we are His children and as His sons and daughters we have
the freedom to be ourselves. Psalms 139 tell us that we weren’t an accident, a mishap, or
an after-thought, but that He purposefully and personally designed us. We are unique, a
one-of-a-kind masterpiece and God wants us to celebrate our uniqueness. Not hide it
behind a mask, a facade, or pretence. He wants us to be the authentic person He created.
● Psalms 139:13-18 (TPT) You formed my innermost being, shaping my delicate
inside and my intricate outside, and wove them all together in my mother’s womb.
14
I thank you, God, for making me so mysteriously complex! Everything you do is
marvellously breathtaking. It simply amazes me to think about it! How thoroughly
you know me, Lord! 15 You even formed every bone in my body when you created
me in the secret place; carefully, skilfully you shaped me from nothing to something.
16
You saw who you created me to be before I became me! Before I’d ever seen the
light of day, the number of days you planned for me were already recorded in your
book. 17-18 Every single moment you are thinking of me! How precious and wonderful
to consider that you cherish me constantly in your every thought! O God, your
desires toward me are more than the grains of sand on every shore! When I awake
each morning, you’re still with me.
How does God see me?
As a result of (Adam’s) sin, our relationship with our Heavenly Father was broken and
distorted, but through our faith in Jesus (the shedding of His blood, His death and
resurrection), the Father see us as:
● His children and heirs.
o John 1:12 (NLT) But to all who believed Him and accepted Him, He gave the
right to become children of God.
o Gal 4:7 (NLT) Now you are no longer a slave but God’s own child. And since
you are his child, God has made you His heir.
● Just as if we had never sinned.
o Col 1:22 (NLT) Now He has reconciled you to Himself through the death of
Christ in His physical body. As a result, He has brought you into His own
presence, and you are holy and blameless as you stand before Him without a
single fault.
● Chosen and accepted
o 1 Pet 2:9 (NLT) But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You
are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you
can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness
into his wonderful light.
o Rom 5:17 (CEV) Death ruled like a king because Adam had sinned. But that
cannot compare with what Jesus Christ has done. God has been so kind to us,
and He has accepted us because of Jesus. And so we will live and rule like
kings.

Living from the place of ACCEPTANCE.

Often, people try to earn God’s blessings and favour. The truth is it can’t be done. I can’t
earn what’s already been given. When Christ gave His life for us, He had already decided
we were valuable enough and significant enough to redeem. That’s the place to live life
from. Not so that I will be accepted, but because I am accepted.

God’s Plan for my Life.

God has an amazing plan and purpose for our lives. One that we won’t be disappointed in.
● Jer 29:11 (NLT) For I know the plans I have for you,” says the LORD. “They are
plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.
The bedrock of His plan and the fulfillment of our destiny is established on these two simple
principles.
● Love God - through a relationship with Him, we become Christ like; we carry His
very heart.
o Matt 22:37 (NLT) Jesus said to him, “‘You must love the Lord your God with
all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’
o 2 Cor 3:18 (NLT) So all of us who have had that veil removed can see and
reflect the glory of the Lord. And the Lord—who is the Spirit—makes us more
and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image.
● Serve others - His heart loves people.
o Matt 22:39 (NLT) The second is like it, ‘You must love your neighbour as you
love yourself.’
o Matt 20:28 (TPT) For even the Son of Man did not come expecting to be
served but to serve and give his life in exchange for the salvation of many.”
o Gal 5:13 (ESV) For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use
your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one
another.
