WHAT ARE
GOALS?

• Goals are ends toward which you direct Motivate you to do your work,
your effort. attend classes & study for exams
• Things you want to achieve.
CHARACTERISTICS OF GOALS
1. SPECIFIC
◦ A specific goal should clearly state what you want to accomplish, why it
is an important goal, and how you intend to accomplish the goal.

◦ Example :

“I’ll do my homework at 7:00”

“I’ll do problems 1 to 20 of tutorial 9 in Mathematics text


(page 54) at 7:00 on Tuesday.”
2. MEASURABLE
◦ Include clear criteria to measure your progress.
◦ At the end of your study session, you’ll be able to determine whether
you did what you planned to do.

◦ Example :

“I will study OPM”

“I will read pages 10-12 in my OPM text and work all the
sample problems”
3. ATTAINABLE
◦ Goals should be achievable – you can determine whether you reached
it.
◦ You begin to figure out ways you can make them come true.
◦ Inspiring, meaningful, challenging enough to motivates people to do it
and succeed.
◦ Example :

“Don’t expect to get a A+ in Calculus if your math


background is very weak”
4. RELEVANT
◦ Make goals that are important to you & your lifestyle.

◦ Example : As a Accounting student….

“I am sure that I will graduate on time”


5. TIME BASED
◦ Goals need to have a limited time frame.
◦ Set specific time / deadlines to complete your goals.

◦ Example :

“Our group will submit the assignment by this week”


◦ Goals also should be self-chosen & positive.

◦ Also avoid using words like try, think, hope, and should when you describe your goals.

“I’m not going to fail this test”

“I’m going to pass this test”
