Nowadays, Algerian teenagers have different hobbies but with the progress of
technology, people keep complaining that teenagers today spend a lot of time surfing
on the net and using too much Facebook instead of studying or doing other interesting
activities. Therefore, I decided to do a survey to find out if this was true.
I submitted a questionnaire to sixty male and female Algerian young people
between 12 and 20 years old in order to know what they usually do during their free
time. When I asked them if they liked surfing on the net, all of them said they adored
it. When I asked them if they had internet at home, 30% answered yes, 20% said they
had it on their phone while 5% replied that they went to the cybercafé. I asked them
how much time they spent surfing on the net a week but my main interest was what
they used it for. All the teenagers questioned said that they regularly used it for social
media like Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat. 40 % replied that they played online
games, but not very much, only 10 % of the informants answered that they did some
research for their studies. Then, I asked them what their favourite pastime was 45 %
replied surfing on the net, while 10 % answered practicing sport but only 5 % said
watching TV.
As expected, my survey showed that Algerian teenagers’ favourite pastime was
surfing on the net in general and using social media in particular.
