Air Around Us

By – Anchal Gupta
CLASS 6TH
Air

Air is a mixture of several gases.

• We can see or smell air but air is everywhere
around us.
• No living things can survive without air.
Wind

Moving air called Wind.

Properties Of Air

• Air is transparent. We can see through it.

• Air is colourless, tasteless and odourless gaseous substance.

• Air has mass.

• Air dissolves in water.

• Air can be compressed.

Air is Present Everywhere Around Us

Conclusion- A glass bottle which appears to be

empty to us is actually filled with air. That concludes

that air occupies space.

Atmosphere

Our earth is surrounded by a layer of air (or envelope of

air).
“The envelope of air that surrounds the earth is called
Atmosphere”.
• Atmosphere is essential for life on earth.
Why people who climb mountains carry cylinders?
Why people who climb mountains carry cylinders?

Answer-As we go higher up in the atmosphere, the

amount of air becomes less and less. The air at the top
of very high mountains is thin that it does not have
enough oxygen for the people to breathe properly.
Is the composition of air always exactly the same?
Is the composition of air always exactly the same?
Answer- The composition of air is not always exactly the same. The
composition of air changes slightly from place to place and season to
season.
For example, the air over industrial cities has a higher amount of
carbon dioxide in it than air over the spaces. The air in coastal area
may have more water vapour than inland area. The air also contain
more water vapour in rainy season. Similarly, the amount of dust in
the air is more in windy places than other areas.
Air Is A Mixture Of Different Gases
Nitrogen

• Nitrogen is not essential for breathing.

• Nitrogen is colourless, tasteless and odourless gas.

• Nitrogen is slightly soluble in water.

• Nitrogen don't support combustion .

• Nitrogen is a very unreactive gas.

Importance of Nitrogen

Nitrogen gas present in air is important for living things.

All the living things need nitrogen compounds for their growth.

The plants use nitrogen gas of the air to make proteins. These

proteins are used by the plants for their growth as well as the

growth of human beings and other animals. Thus, Nitrogen

is needed by plants to make proteins.

Oxygen

• Oxygen is essential for breathing.

• Oxygen is colourless, tasteless and odourless gas.

• Oxygen is slightly soluble in water.

• Oxygen gas does not burn itself but a supporter of burning..

Importance of Oxygen

All the living things use the oxygen of air for respiration.

During respiration, oxygen breaks down food to give carbon dioxide, water and energy.
Oxygen is Necessary for Living Things
Oxygen is Necessary for burning

The process of burning of a substance is called Combustion. Air (oxygen) is known as

supporter of combustion. A substance can not burn without oxygen.

Carbon Dioxide

• Air contains 0.03% of carbon dioxide gas.

• Carbon dioxide is colourless, tasteless and odourless gas.

• It is slightly sour in taste.

• It is moderately soluble in water

• It neither burn nor support burning.

How carbon dioxide is important for us?
How carbon dioxide is important for us?

Answer- Green plants need carbon dioxide gas to make

food. In sunlight, green plants use carbon dioxide from
air and water from soil to make food by the process of
photosynthesis. So, all the food
which animal ( including human
being) eat is made from
carbon dioxide gas in the air
Water Vapour

• We can not see ‘ water vapour’ present in air because it is ‘ water in the form of gas’.

• Water vapour comes into the air from the evaporation of water present on the earth ( in

ponds, lakes, rivers and oceans, etc.) and from transpiration. The presence of water

vapour in air is important for working of water cycle in nature.

Dust Particle

• Dust particle always present in air.

• The dust particles comes into air from number of sources such as blowing of wind,

traffic on roads, dusting at home, construction activities and agricultural practices.

Smoke

• Smoke consist of the fine carbon particles and some gases.

• Smoke is produced by burning of fuels. Smoke is always harmful.

How does oxygen become available to animals and
plants living in soil?
Why does earthworm come out of the soil during heavy
rain?
How does oxygen become available to animals and
plants living in soil?

Answer- The animals which live inside the soil get oxygen
for breathing from air present between the soil particle.
How does oxygen become available to animals and
plants living in water?
How does oxygen become available to animals and
plants living in water?

Answer- The animals and

plants live in water use the
oxygen dissolved in water
for breathing.
How does oxygen in air replaced?
How does oxygen in air replaced?
Answer- The oxygen of air being consumed by animals in
respiration, and in the burning of fuels is constantly
being replaced by plants through the process of
photosynthesis.
Uses of Air

• Air is used by human beings for breathing or respiration.

• Air is used for burning fuels .

• Compressed air is used as fuel .

• Wind is used to turn the blades of wind mills.

• Air helps in the movement of yachts, parachutes and Aeroplan.

• Air plays an important role in the water cycle in nature.
