Proposed Title: Enhancing Understanding and Appreciation of Heraldic and National
Symbols: An Educational Initiative

I. Context and Rationale Study Background

In today's fast-paced world, where information is abundant and attention spans
are fleeting, the significance of national symbols and heraldic emblems often takes a
back seat in the minds of the public. Many individuals, including students, lack a deep
understanding and appreciation for the historical and cultural meanings embedded in
these symbols. This knowledge gap not only affects our collective identity but also
hinders our ability to connect with the rich heritage that these symbols represent.
Understanding the importance of national symbols in fostering unity, pride, and a
sense of belonging, there is a pressing need for educational initiatives to bridge this
gap. Our research aims to explore and implement effective strategies that enhance
the understanding and appreciation of heraldic and national symbols among students
and the wider community.
Heraldic symbols, such as coats of arms and national flags, serve as visual
representations of a country's history, values, and aspirations. Despite their ubiquitous
presence, there is often a lack of comprehensive education on their meanings and
significance. This study is rooted in the belief that a well-informed citizenry contributes
to a stronger, more united nation. The rationale for this research is multifaceted. Firstly,
a profound understanding of national symbols fosters a sense of pride and identity
among individuals. When citizens comprehend the historical context and symbolism
behind these emblems, they are more likely to feel connected to their country and its
heritage. This emotional connection, in turn, can contribute to social cohesion and a
shared national identity.
Secondly, the educational system plays a pivotal role in shaping individuals'
perspectives. By incorporating comprehensive lessons on heraldic symbols and
national emblems into the curriculum, we can ensure that students develop an early
and enduring appreciation for their cultural and historical significance. This initiative
not only enhances educational content but also instills values of respect and
patriotism. Furthermore, the study recognizes the potential impact of such educational
interventions on fostering a more informed and engaged citizenry. In an era where
misinformation is prevalent, a well-informed population is better equipped to critically
evaluate and navigate the complexities of contemporary issues.
Therefore, this research aims to contribute to the broader goal of nurturing
responsible and informed citizens through a targeted focus on heraldic and national
symbols. In conclusion, our research seeks to address the current deficit in
understanding and appreciating heraldic and national symbols by proposing and
implementing an educational initiative. By delving into the historical context and
rationale behind this endeavor, we aim to lay the foundation for a more connected,
informed, and proud citizenry. Through comprehensive education, we aspire to ensure
that these symbols continue to serve as pillars of national identity and unity in the
years to come.

II. Action Research Question AR Questions

1. How can we enhance people's understanding and appreciation of national symbols,
such as flags and coats of arms, to foster a stronger sense of pride and connection to
their country?
2. What role does education play in bridging the knowledge gap regarding heraldic
symbols, and how can incorporating comprehensive lessons into the curriculum
contribute to a more informed and engaged citizenry?
3. Why is it important for individuals, especially students, to have a deep understanding
of the historical and cultural meanings embedded in national symbols, and how can
this knowledge positively impact social cohesion and a shared national identity?

III. Proposed Innovation, Intervention, Strategy

Describe Innovation/Intervention/ Strategy
The incentive theory of motivation is a behavioral theory that proposes that people
are motivated by a desire for rewards and reinforcement. According to the incentive
theory, people will behave in ways that they feel will result in a reward while avoiding
activities that may result in punishment. Cherry, (2022).
To make learning about heraldic and national symbols more interesting, we can
use creative strategies. One way is by creating interactive lessons with videos,
pictures, and quizzes that help students really understand the history and meaning
behind these symbols. This way, it's not just reading from a book, but more like playing
and exploring to learn. Another idea is to have students work together on projects
related to heraldic symbols. They could design their own symbols, investigate the
history behind specific emblems, or even set up exhibitions in their schools or
communities.
By doing things together, students not only learn more, but they also feel a
connection to the heraldic symbols as they become a part of the learning process. So,
whether it's through fun interactive lessons, collaborative projects, or integrating
lessons into regular studies, these strategies aim to make learning about heraldic and
national symbols more exciting and easier for everyone.

IV. Action Research Methods (Describe Action Research Methods)

The data collected from the surveys will be analyzed to identify any significant
changes in the participants' knowledge and appreciation of heraldic and national
symbols. A comparative analysis between the pre-test and post-test results will be
conducted to measure the effectiveness of the educational initiative. Additionally,
qualitative insights from open-ended survey questions or interviews may be
considered to gain a deeper understanding of the participants' experiences and
perceptions throughout the initiative. The combination of quantitative and qualitative
data will provide a comprehensive evaluation of the impact of the action research on
enhancing understanding and appreciation of heraldic and national symbols among
Grade 8 students and Boy Scouts in Los Banos National High School.

V. Action Research Work Plan (Summarize Action Research Work Plan)

The action research work plan revolves around enhancing the understanding and
appreciation of heraldic and national symbols among Grade 8 students and Boy
Scouts of the Philippines at Los Banos National High School. The study involves a
diverse representation of participants to ensure a comprehensive understanding. To
gauge the effectiveness of the educational initiative, a survey utilizing pre-test and
post-test assessments will be conducted, covering aspects such as historical facts,
symbolic meanings, and overall perceptions of national symbols. The implementation
of the educational initiative will incorporate interactive lessons, collaborative projects,
and other creative strategies aimed at making the learning experience engaging and
enjoyable. The process includes a pre-test assessment before the educational
intervention to establish a baseline understanding, followed by the implementation of
the educational initiative.
A post-test assessment will then be conducted to measure any improvements in
knowledge and appreciation of heraldic and national symbols. Data analysis will
involve both quantitative (pre-test and post-test results) and qualitative (open-ended
survey questions or interviews) methods to identify changes in participants'
understanding. The research will conclude with an evaluation of the results, providing
insights into the impact of the educational initiative on enhancing understanding and
appreciation of heraldic and national symbols among the targeted participants. This
action research work plan aims to contribute to a more informed and connected
student body.

VII. Plan for Dissemination and Utilization (Describe how the results will be
shared)
We intend to formally present our research findings to the teachers and students
at Los Banos National High School, focusing specifically on the significance of heraldic
symbols. Throughout the presentation, we will share the crucial insights we have
gathered about heraldic and national symbols, explaining the historical and cultural
meanings behind them. To enhance the engagement, we plan to incorporate a live
demonstration, performing some heraldic symbols to provide a hands-on experience.
We aim to illustrate how understanding these symbols can not only deepen cultural
awareness but also make the educational experience more interactive and
memorable. The presentation provides a platform for us to collaboratively explore the
implications of our research on teaching, emphasizing the importance of incorporating
heraldic symbols into our lessons.
This formal presentation serves as a valuable opportunity for everyone in the
school community to learn together and contribute to making our lessons not only more
interesting but also culturally enriching.
