2. SAMARRA – ONE
OF THE HOLIEST
PLACES IN IRAQ

The Malwiya Mosque (Great Mosque of

Samarra) in Iraq

Walking up the Malwiya Mosque (Great

Mosque of Samarra) in Iraq

THE IMPORTANCE OF
SAMARRA
Samarra praised as one of the best
places to visit in Iraq, is a magnificent
ancient city located on the banks of
the Tigris River in the Saladin
Governate of Iraq. Today, this beautiful
ancient place is an Archeological City
and it is listed as a UNESCO World
Heritage Site.

Its history goes back as far as the 5th

millennium BCE when Samarra was
simply a settlement. Then, between the
3rd and 7th century AD, the town of
Samarra was founded.

In the medieval age, Samarra was the

capital of the Abbasid Caliphate, which
is the third caliphate succeeding the
Islamic Prophet Muhammad.

The town of Samarra was flourishing

until the capital was moved back to
Bagdad in the 9th century AD. After this
move, Samarra was slowly declining
but it has revived since then.

Imagine, it’s the only Islamic capital in

the world that preserved its original
layout, architecture and artistic relics.

BEST PLACES TO VISIT IN

SAMARRA
1) MALWIYA MOSQUE aka
GREAT MOSQUE OF
SAMARRA

The beautiful Malwiya Mosque is not

only the major tourist attraction of the
city of Samarra but one of Iraq’s most
famous landmarks.

What makes this mosque special is its

spiral minaret built in the 9th century.
This absolutely stunning spiraling cone
is 52 meters (171 ft) high and 33
meters (108 ft) wide with a spiral ramp.

HOW TO GET TO THE

MALWIYA MOSQUE
1,3 km from Museum Square if you go
there by shared taxi. Excluding time
spent at checkpoints, it should take
about 15 minutes to walk there.

If you go there in a private taxi, it will

take you there directly.

2) AL ASKARI SHRINE aka

HARAM OF IMAM ALI AL-
HADI

The entrance of the Al-Askari Mosque, also

known as the Mosque of the Golden Dome
in Samarra, Iraq

The Al-Askari Shrine is a magnificent

shrine built in the 9th century by the
Abbasid Caliphate.

There, you can find the mausolea of

two important imams of Shi’ism: Ali al-
Hadi and Hasan al-Askari, the 11th and
12th imams of Shia Islam. That makes
Samarra one of the most important and
holiest pilgrimage sites of Shi’ite
Muslims.

You will not find the mosque in its

original shape as it has been bombed a
couple of times, in 2006 and 2007.
