PICTORIAL TRAVELOGUE

EGYPT
1992

BY

Maqsood Ahmad Khan

PREFACE

I had read and heard a lot about the land of Egypt and was very keen to visit
that country. At last, this desire of mine to see this land was fulfilled during
1992. My wife, Farzana Ahmad Khan, was equally keen to see Egypt. We
were lucky to get an opportunity to visit this land.
While, I was the part of a project in the Sudan, I detour my journey during
home leave through Egypt.
During the last dates of December 1991, I with my wife and son, Jehanzeb
Ahmad Khan were in Cairo where we were accommodated in the vacant flat of
our Egyptian colleague, Mr. Sameer, in the Sudan. The flat was fully furnished
and very comfortable. We made this place our base and visited almost whole
of Egypt.
This Pictorial Travelogue is an account of our activities in various places of
Egypt, which, we enjoyed a lot and still cherish those memories.
For the success of my journey to Egypt, I express my indebt-ness to my
Egyptian friend working with us in the Sudan who offered his personal place in
Cairo for our stay there, which, enabled us to move around the whole country
making this place our camp in Egypt. Then to our son Moeen Khan and
daughter Kiran, who anxiously waited for us back at our homeland in Pakistan.
The cooperative behaviour of our young son Jehanzeb Ahmad Khan, who was
accompanying us in this journey is quite appreciable, who, never bothered us
for anything and enjoyed the journey like a grown up

EGYPT

Egypt is spread over Africa, as well as, Asia and is a

Mediterranean country. Egypt is surrounded by
Palestine, Israel, Red Sea, Sudan, and Libya.
Egypt has long history and is cradle of civilization and
full of iconic monuments like Pyramids in Giza, Sphinx,
Memphis, Thebes, and others down in the south, in
around Aswan. Egypt is also known for infrastructure
and institutions built and established by the Muslim
Rulers.
Egypt is a country, which, has attraction for tourists and
is visited by many.
We visited Egypt during early 1992 in January and had
an opportunity to be in Cairo, Alexandria, Port Said,
Suez and Awan. We enjoyed our visit very much and
could take some photographs. On the following pages, I
am sharing these with the viewers / readers as a memoir.

Egypt is known over the world for her pyramids, the ancient
conic structure. The most famous pyramids are located in Giza
on the west bank of the Nile River in the south of Cairo.

While visiting Egypt and were in Cairo one day we made plan
to visit the famous pyramids of Egypt. We hired a cab and
reached this historical place and spent the whole day there.
We spent the day like a picnic as others were doing so. There
was lot of rush there, mostly, Egyptians. We roamed about the
whole area and enjoyed every corner. My wife and young son
went inside the Khufu and narrated a lot about the chamber.

AL-AZHAR MOSQUE

Al-Azhar Mosque in Cairo, Egypt was built during

Fatimid Dynasty in 970 AD and is famous all over the
world especially amongst the Muslims.
We visited Egypt during January 1992. On one Friday
we made a programme to visit Al Azhar Mosque. After
visiting Masjid e Husain we went to the mosque across
the road. Due to Friday there was great rush in the
mosque for Juma’a‎Prayer.‎We‎also‎joined‎the‎prayer;‎
and when the people dispersed after the prayer we had
a tour of the mosque. We also went up on the roof and
had a view of the Cairo city from there.
We took some photographs which are placed on the
following pages.

Port Said is an Egyptian city at the Northern end of the

Suez Canal, on the Mediterranean Sea.
We travelled from Cairo to Port Said by bus. We passed by
Ismailia in the mid of the Suez Canal and then travelled
along the canal to Port Said. When we reached there the
weather was very pleasant which became quite violent in
the evening and it became very cold that we had to buy
warm clothes for our son, Jehanzeb Ahmad Khan.
During the day we walked through the streets and the port
area. The port area was crowded which we learnt that
things were very cheap there because being tax free.
We had a ferry tour and had our lunch on the ferry. We
had the tour of the area where Mediterranean and Sues
waters meet. A few of the pictures of the tour are shared
with the readers.
Huge structure of Sea Port and Suez Canal Authorities
buildings can be seen around.

Suez is a seaport city in North-Eastern Egypt, located on

the North Coast of the Gulf of Suez, near the Southern
Terminus of the Suez Canal.
When at Caro, we made a programme to visit the Suez
Canal so we decided to see the canal at Suez City. We
boarded a bus at a Petrol Pump, which was a bus stop
near our place in Cairo, for the buses heading to the Suez
City.
We reached Suez after sometime. Most of the time, we
passed through the deserted land, on our way to Suez.
After having reached the Suez city, We roamed about for a
while then we reached the southern-most point of the Suez
Canal. It became our picnic spot where no tourists were
there at that time. However, a few locales were having fun
enjoying watching the ships passing through in both
directions.
It was quite exciting for us watching the flow of different
types of ships passing through the canal and ending and

130
starting sailing their journey through the canal. We also
saw the ships ending their journey being piloted to the
berth places. It was quite thrilling.
Venders were selling corns, tea (Qehwa) and sugarcanes
loitering around. We enjoyed the hospitality of Egyptian
friend.
Due the presence of our son, the local youngsters became
friendly him and we passed our time in a very peasant
atmosphere and enjoyed every bit of our stay there. In the
evening we returned back to Cairo.

The Cairo Tower is located on Gezira Island between

the two streams of River Nile flowing through Cairo.
One day we visited this tower. There were lot many
visitors around who were climbing up the tower and
enjoying the panoramic view of Cairo city.

There was a rotating restaurant at one of the top floors

of the tower. For this restaurant there was a lift
provided in the tower. We decided to dine in this
restaurant, so we boarded the lift, and entered into the
restaurant which was beautifully maintained.

We dined there; and also enjoyed the evening and

night view of the city. The restaurant was moving very
slowly and we were enjoying the dinner as well. The
meal was served in different courses and was very
delicious. We enjoyed it very much, however it was

153
quite expensive. During our stay in the restaurant
there was only one Egyptian diner there.

There were many people around the restaurant in the

view gallery and enjoying. The weather was very cold
outside. We stood in the gallery for a while as well and
enjoyed the open air at top of the tower.

The photographs taken are placed for the readers.

Aswan is the southernmost Egyptian city on the Nile River.

The city has significant‎archaeological‎sites‎like‎the‎Philae’s‎

Elephantine Island and Nubian Village,

We left Cairo at 7:30 am on 31st January 1992, by train to

Aswan, enjoying our long journey by train watching the
vastness of River Nile, the irrigation on its both sides, the
vast deserts stretching upto where we could see, the cities
enroute like Wasit, we reached Aswan late at night 12:00 PM
/AM. The railway station was quite deserted at that time.

We came out of the station, found a motor cab waiting for

the passenger of the last train. We requested him to take us
to a suitable hotel. After seeing one or two hotels we could
find a room in the Happy Hotel on the main central market
road which was totally deserted. We checked in and in the
morning enjoyed a good breakfast. Through the windows we
could see the riverside and had picturesqueview from its
window.

ELPHAENTINE ISLAND
NUBIAN VILLAGES
ASWAN – EGYPT

In the middle of the Nile River at Aswan, Elephantine Island

is home to Nubian villages and a handful of tourist sites.
We visited this island by boat and stayed there for quite a
long time. We passed through the streets of the Nubian
village. Most of the Nubian women were wearing black
clothes.
We settled for a while at the bank of the island and enjoyed a
sort of picnic there.

PHILAE ISLAND
ASWAN – EGYPT

Philae Island is in the in the middle of the River Nile, south of

Aswan.
There is a magnificent temple on this island for the Goddess
Isis. This temple was submerged after the first Aswan Dam
in 1906 but reemerged on completion of the High Dam, in
1971.
We reached this island by boat and enjoyed the
magnanimous temple

from different places of the world. While in Aswan visited and
enjoyed the beauty of this garden. We reached the garden
through a boat. We relaxed in the open spaces of this garden and

EPILOGUE

During few days we almost saw Aswan and its

suburbs and major attraction. On 2nd of February 1992
we left Aswan for Cairo by train at 18:30.

Next day on 3rd we reached Cairo at 10:00. The weather

at Cairo was dusty and stormy. However, we managed
to visit the Airline office in the downtown and got our
reservation confirmed.

On 4th we finalized our preparation for leaving Cairo;

and also found time to visit Roxy Square, Cairo to pay
our Farewell Homage to Egypt. At 16:30 we flew from
Cairo for Dubai wherefrom by connected flight we
reached our hometown, Lahore, Pakistan at 8:25 on 6th
of February 1992.

Our visit to Egypt is a dream journey which we dreamt

since our childhood. Mystery and thrilling stories,
mummies, ruins, Al-Ahrams – Pyramids – Al-Azhar,
Alexandria, Al Saeed, Al Suez and Al Aswan, full of
attractions. To visit these places was the greatest
329
desire of me and my wife which was got fulfilled. We y
remember the minutest detail of our visit, even till
today in the year 2021

I, Maqsood Ahmad Khan, after having
the Master Degree in Economics from
the Government College, Lahore (Punjab
University) in 1972, qualified the
Competitive Examination for Civil
Services of Pakistan in 1974 and joined
Traffic (Transportation & Commercial
Group) of Pakistan Railways. I rose to the
level of General Manager (Welfare &
Training); and completed my services on
4th March 2010, after attaining the age
of superannuation. During the service, I
could visit many a countries, viz Belgium,
Canada, Egypt , England, France, Holland,
Hong Kong, India, Japan, Malaysia,
Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Sri
Lanka, Sudan, Switzerland, UAE, USA,
West Germany in connection with
foreign assignments, trainings, meetings,
visits and study tours; alone or with the
members of my family. To make theses
journeys memorable, the use of the
camera was a tool with me. The
collection of the photographs thus taken,
when seen at the later years, gave an
account of travels round the world,
which I am sharing with my
readers/viewers as piece of information;
memoir or self-actualization. Hope, the
readers would enjoy my Pictorial
Travelogue.
