All missionaries in the Utah Provo Mission will dedicate a significant portion of their study in March to the document
“The Living Christ – The Testimony of the Apostles.” This guide contains study suggestions for each week in March.
Week 1 – March 3-9
From “The Living Christ”
As we commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ two millennia ago, we offer our testimony of the reality of His
matchless life and the infinite virtue of His great atoning sacrifice. None other has had so profound an influence upon all
who have lived and will yet live upon the earth.
He was the Great Jehovah of the Old Testament, the Messiah of the New. Under the direction of His Father, He was
the creator of the earth. “All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made” (John
1:3). Though sinless, He was baptized to fulfill all righteousness. He “went about doing good” (Acts 10:38), yet was
despised for it. His gospel was a message of peace and goodwill. He entreated all to follow His example. He walked the
roads of Palestine, healing the sick, causing the blind to see, and raising the dead. He taught the truths of eternity, the
reality of our premortal existence, the purpose of our life on earth, and the potential for the sons and daughters of God
in the life to come.
Introduction
The Prophet Joseph Smith taught, “The fundamental principles of our religion are the testimony of the Apostles and
Prophets, concerning Jesus Christ, that He died, was buried, and rose again the third day, and ascended into heaven; and
all other things which pertain to our religion are only appendages to it” (Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Joseph
Smith, 49). … President Russell M. Nelson noted that “it was this very statement of the Prophet that provided the
incentive for 15 prophets, seers, and revelators to issue and sign their testimony to commemorate the 2,000th
anniversary of the Lord’s birth. That historic testimony is titled ‘The Living Christ.’ … I urge you to study ‘The Living
Christ.’”

Questions to Ponder
• What is the significance of the Apostles’ phrase, “we offer our testimony?” Why is their testimony credible and
significant?
• In an interview with the Church News in April 2000, then-Elder Russell M. Nelson said “The Living Christ” and the
“Special Witnesses of Christ” video highlight “the most sacred thing that we can contribute — mainly our testimony
that the living Christ is the literal Son of God.” What makes a testimony “sacred”? How is your missionary experience
parallel to this, as you offer your sacred testimony to people you meet?
• Think of three or four people who have had a profound influence on your life. What made them stand out? Have you
had, or will you have, a profound influence on someone else’s life?
• Why can the Apostles state that “None other has had so profound an influence” as Jesus Christ? How can we retain
this respect for Christ’s influence throughout our lives?
• As quoted in the second paragraph, after His baptism the Savior “went about doing good.” That description seems to
encompass all His teaching, healing, etc. How can you better follow His example and go about doing good?
• There are many truths we deal with and are constrained by every day, for example, gravity, electricity, nutritional and
health truths, etc. What makes the “truths of eternity” different? How should we approach our learning them? How
do these eternal truths affect our daily life?
For Additional Study
• Review Matthew 16:13–17. What was Peter’s expression that indicated that Christ was different? How did Peter gain
his testimony?
• Review the talk “Drawing the Power of Jesus Christ into Our Lives” by President Russell M. Nelson given in the April
2017 General Conference. churchofjesuschrist.org/study/general-conference/2017/04/drawing-the-power-of-jesus-

In the talk referenced above, “Drawing the Power of Jesus Christ into Our Lives,” President Russell M. Nelson, then
President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, described his challenge to young adults. He had earlier asked them “to
consecrate a portion of their time each week to study everything Jesus said and did as recorded in the standard works. I
invited them to let the scriptural citations about Jesus Christ in the Topical Guide become their personal core
curriculum.” Here are a few selections from the Topical Guide:
• Jesus Christ, Jehovah: by my name Jehovah was I not known, Ex. 6:3; thou, whose name alone is Jehovah, Ps. 83:18;
Lord Jehovah is my strength, Isa. 12:2 (26:4; 2 Ne. 22:2); Jehovah, the Eternal Judge, Moro. 10:34; my name is
Jehovah, Abr. 1:16 (2:8).
• Jesus Christ, Creator: when I laid the foundations of the earth, Job 38:4; Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth,
Isa. 40:28; All things were made by him, John 1:3 (Col. 1:16; Rev. 4:11); earth was created by the power of his word,
Jacob 4:9; man have I created after the body of my spirit, Ether 3:16; by him … the worlds are and were created, D&C
76:24.
• Jesus Christ, Exemplar: take up his cross, and follow me, Mark 8:34 (10:21; Luke 9:23; D&C 56:2); I am the way, John
14:6; be perfect even as I, 3 Ne. 12:48; set an example for you, 3 Ne. 18:16; what manner of men ought ye to be? …
even as I am, 3 Ne. 27:27.
Week 2 – March 10-16
From “The Living Christ”
He instituted the sacrament as a reminder of His great atoning sacrifice. He was arrested and condemned on
spurious charges, convicted to satisfy a mob, and sentenced to die on Calvary’s cross. He gave His life to atone for the
sins of all mankind. His was a great vicarious gift in behalf of all who would ever live upon the earth.
We solemnly testify that His life, which is central to all human history, neither began in Bethlehem nor concluded on
Calvary. He was the Firstborn of the Father, the Only Begotten Son in the flesh, the Redeemer of the world.
He rose from the grave to “become the firstfruits of them that slept” (1 Corinthians 15:20). As Risen Lord, He visited
among those He had loved in life. He also ministered among His “other sheep” (John 10:16) in ancient America. In the
modern world, He and His Father appeared to the boy Joseph Smith, ushering in the long-promised “dispensation of the
fulness of times” (Ephesians 1:10).

Questions to Ponder
• Since it was important enough for the Savior to spend some of his precious few remaining hours instituting the
sacrament with His Apostles, we should treat it with sacred reverence. How do you make this weekly experience
more spiritual or sacred?
• We teach about the Savior performing the Atonement for all of God’s children, but we often fail to include ourselves
in that group. As you have studied this document, how has the Savior’s Atonement become more personal to you?
• How does your faith in the Savior and the promise of resurrection influence the way you live?
• This section of the document describes three appearances of the resurrected Christ. What was the purpose of each
of these appearances? What do you learn about the Savior from his words and actions during these appearances?
• If you were able to have a personal visit with the Savior, what would you most want to ask Him or talk about? Have
you made these thoughts part of your personal prayers?

Questions to Ponder
• Picture yourself having a vision of the Savior. What words would you use to describe Him? Would you find our
language capable of giving an adequate description? How do the descriptions by others help you better understand
Him?
• What about the Savior qualified Him to be our “advocate with the Father?” Why do we need an advocate?
• Consider the influence of the Spirit on Joseph Smith. He was unlearned, struggled to construct sentences, and yet
could pen such powerful, profound words of testimony as recorded above. Consider the times the Spirit has blessed
you to do something beyond your natural ability. If you haven’t already recorded these experiences in your journal,
take the time to do so now.

Questions to Ponder
• Since the Savior’s “priesthood and His Church have been restored,” and you have the privilege of participating in the
Church, what gospel truths are particularly meaningful to you? How will the restoration affect your future life?
• How do the restored truths help in your personal worship of the Lord Jesus Christ?
• We’re taught that Christ “will someday return to earth.” Consider the times beginning with the First Vision that Christ
has already returned to earth. What will be different about this final return that the Apostles describe? What are you
doing to help the world prepare? What are you doing to personally prepare?
• Note the attributes or titles of the Savior included in the last two paragraphs of the document. If you were writing
this description, what additional titles or attributes would you use to describe the Savior?
• The Apostles conclude, “God be thanked for the matchless gift of His divine Son.” What are some of the most
important gifts you’ve been given because of Jesus Christ? What makes those gifts important to you?
• How has studying “The Living Christ” document affected your testimony of, and love for, the Savior?

Attribute Activity
The purpose of this activity is to help you identify opportunities for spiritual growth. Read each item below. Decide how
true that statement is about you, and fill in the blank with the appropriate response (1 to 5). No one can respond
“always” to every statement. Spiritual growth is a lifelong process. That is one reason it is exciting and rewarding—
because there are countless opportunities to grow and to experience the blessings of growth. Be comfortable with
beginning where you are. Commit yourself to doing the spiritual work needed to grow. Seek God’s help.
