Topic: Definition and Components of a good Technical Report Aim : At the end of this studies students’ should be able to define Technical Report Writing and understand the components of a good technical report Learning Objectives :The objective of this lecture is to teach, prepare and evaluate students of engineering to understand the definition and components of a good technical report for the writing of technical reports and papers in engineering practice. Specific Objectives are: Define Technical Report Writing List and discuss various components of a good technical report Evaluate students understanding of the topic by class interactive discussion and a take home assignment on the lectured topic • Instructional Materials : Lecture Notes, a copy of a good technical report sample, a textbook “ Guide for Writing Technical Reports” by AH Basson & TW von Backström Third Edition, 2007, and an Android Phone Definition of a Technical Report and Technical Report Writing
• In Engineering, one of the major forms of
communication is the technical report. A technical report is the conventional format for reporting the results of a research, investigations, and design projects. • Technical report writing is a formal report writing to a target reader, it conveys technical information of a project ( research investigation or analysis) in a clear and easily accessible format. It is divided into sections that allow different readers to access different levels of information. Components of a Good Technical Report The elements or components of a technical report, in their prescribed sequence, are: • Cover page • Title page • Abstract • Dedication • Acknowledgements • Table of contents • List of tables • List of figures • Nomenclature • Introductory chapters(s) • Central chapters • Conclusions • Tables • Figures • References • Appendices Class Activity and Assignment

Group (A) and (B) 1. Should discuss the differences between a cover page and a title page of project. 2. What is a project abstract? What are the components of a good abstract? What is an average word length of a good abstract? The class should be highly interactive.
