TOPIC/ISSUE/PROBLEM
In this project the group will be investigating the effectiveness of the Government’s ban on
sugary beverages at our school (Re: COUVA WEST SECONDARY).

3
OBJECTIVES
1) To determine how effective was the Government’s ban on sugary beverages.

2) To determine how many students are aware of the ban on sugary beverages.

3) To determine how many students are given sugary beverages by their parents.

4) To determine if there should be a removal of the ban on hot beverages

(example: teas and hot chocolate).

BACKGROUND/OVRVIEW
For our SBA project, our group will be focusing on how effective the Government’s ban on
sugary beverages was.
The ban was implemented on September 2017. The reason for the ban is to eliminate obesity
and diabetes among young children and teenagers. The Ministry of Health stated: “children are
conditioned to consume soft drink and snacks, but the only way to treat it is to go “cold turkey,”
completely stopping the intake of these sugary beverages.

- Obesity levels in Caricom Countries are the highest compared to the rest of the world and
are alarmingly high in our country.

- The Caribbean has some of the highest rates of overweight and obesity in the Americans
with the adults raging from 18.9% in Antigua and Barbuda to 31.6% in the Bahamas at
35.5% and lowest in Saint Lucia at 26.1%. The prevalence of obesity in Caribbean
children is 2-3 times higher than the rest of the world.

- With the obesity epidemic in children and adolescents, the future seen through the risk
factors for non-communicable diseases (NCD’S) looks dismal, as these will be the
future’s working generation but living with higher rates of NCD’S.

- Obesity can lead to many other health problems. Some of these are heart disease, type 2
diabetes, and joint problems. Obesity can be prevented with healthy lifestyle choices like
being more physically active and eating more fruits and vegetables, which is important to
us teenagers and society.

METHODOLOGY

To accumulate information for this study, the group members used a

QUESTIONNAIRE as our primary data source.
The questionnaire consisted of (10) questions. It was distributed to five form levels
(form 1-5), and we distributed 20 questionnaires to each level, making up a sample
side of 100 respondents.
As a data collection tool, a questionnaire has advantages:
1) It is an economical way of accumulating information.
2) It is the best method of collecting information from a large source.
3) Replies may be received very quickly by this method.

A secondary method used was interviews in a limited way to clarify any questions
that some respondents would ask.
The limitations were getting students to answer the questionnaire completely and
accurately.

CONCLUSION
In this project the group conducted a study on the effectiveness of the
Government’s ban on sugary beverages at our school. Investigation findings
showed that 20% of respondents found it was effective, 24% somewhat effective
and 54% not effective, 76% of students stated that they were aware of the ban while
24% were not aware of the ban, 72% students stated that they were given sugary
beverages by their parents and 28% were not.
In conclusion it was found that the Government’s ban on sugary beverages was not
at all effective, based on the findings after analyzing the results from the
questionnaire and interview with the respondents.

RECOMMENDATIONS
- The Government can arrange for a lecture by the Ministry of Health Officials
explaining the effects of sugary beverages overall, especially the health risks
for students.
- The Government should have teachers encourage students to eat healthy
foods/snacks like fruits and vegetables and drink more juice instead of soft
drinks.

- The Government can advise principals of schools to have a meeting with

parents advising them to not buy as much sugary beverages for their children
and to show them the negative effects of these beverages on the developments
of their children especially at their age.
