1) IEC 62923 BAM

Compatibility:
Since the functional specification of BAM has been revised greatly by the standardization of IEC.
It is not fully compatible with the old BAM. When updating the BAM for an existing ship, please
pay attention to the following.

Keep the old BAM and update the peripherals to the new version.:
Even if the AMS in Table 1 No. 16 is operating with the old standard BAM on an existing ship,
it is possible to upgrade the equipment listed in Table 1 to operate with the new standard.
In this case, the Alert Sense configuration file (BAM file) set in the AMS needs to be updated to
comply with the new standard. When updating the software, please check if the ship is equipped
with AMS before visiting the ship and prepare a BAM file according to the new standard. Please
ask for a new BAM file from the contractor who requested to you.

Update old BAM to new BAM:

When updating the AMS in Table 1 No. 16 for an existing ship, please note the following.
Since the operating specifications of the BAM will be changed significantly, please inform users
of this change by referring document [NA21AL0810A -05].
The BAM file set in the AMS is created for already connected equipment, so it can be used
without updating.
If you update your peripherals to a new standard version, you will need to update the BAM file,
so please ask us to create one for you.

BAM file
The BAM system can be run without updating the BAM file. In this case, you will be notified of

2
the occurrence of alerts, but the table of the list of alerts that can occur on each equipment may
not be displayed correctly.

User Interfaces:
For equipment whose user interface has been changed to comply with the new standard, the
instruction manual has been revised. For details, please refer to the technical information of each
equipment.

2) IEC 61162-450
Compatibility:
Since it is upwardly compatible with the old standard, communication is possible even if they are
mixed.
However, the image transmission protocols between VDR and RADAR/ECDIS are not
compatible with the old and new standards. It is necessary to match the compatible standards.

3) Matrix of update requirements

a) For new ships
In case of newly installed equipment on a newly built ship after August 30, all the applicable
equipment to be installed must be updated to the new IEC compliant version.

b-1) For retrofitting
In case of retrofit/addition either VDR or MFD, both VDR and MFD need to be updated to
the new IEC compliant version. In case of retrofit/addition other equipment, only the relevant
equipment needs to be updated to the new IEC compliant version.

*2 When updating the software, the Alert Sense configuration file (BAM file) set in the AMS
needs to be updated to comply with the new standard.
However, this is not necessary when updating the software for VHF, which has not been
supported by the BAM file.

b-2) For repair, maintenance and periodic inspections
The latest software of the VDR and AIS includes functional improvements, so it is necessary
to update the software to the new IEC compliant version when visiting a ship for repair,
maintenance, or periodic inspection. It is not required for other equipment to update the
software to the new IEC compliant version when visiting a ship for repair, maintenance, or
periodic inspection. However, this does not apply if functional improvements are included in
future software releases of each equipment.

*2 When updating the software, please turn off the BAM setting on the AIS equipment. This will
keep the alert output as it was before the update, so that the Alert Sense configuration File
(BAM file) set in the AMS does not need to be updated. Please refer to the technical
information of AIS for more details.

4) Equipment in preparation
For equipment for which numbers are not listed in the Technical Information in Table 1,
preparations are underway to comply with the new standard.
The certification Agency (TUV) has issued a letter indicating that the equipment is undergoing
certification. Please use this letter as a substitute until the certificate is issued.

5) Work details
When installing the applicable equipment in a new ship on or after August 30, 2021, please
download the latest version of the software shown in Table 1 from "MS WEB" and update the
software according to the technical Information and work procedures.
As the certificate has been updated, please download it from "MS WEB" and replace the old
certificate kept on the ship.
The instruction manual for each equipment has also been updated. Please prepare the documents
before visiting the ship.

MED Certification Updates – Bridge Alert Management IEC 62923-1:2018 & IEC 62923-2:2018

Dear Mr Tanabe,

This letter is to confirm that TÜV SÜD Danmark have received applications for the update of the following
Marine Equipment Directive Module B Certifcates to incorporate the Bridge Alert Management (BAM)
requirements of IEC 62923-1:2018 and IEC 62923-2:2018.

Module B Reference No. Product Type

DK-MED000023/24/26/1034/1064 JSS-2XXX Series MF/HF Radio Equipment
DK-MED000029 JHS-183 AIS Equipment

DK-MED001010 NCR-333 Navtex Equipment
DK-MED000115 JLN-740/741 SDME Equipment
DK-MED000124 JHS-800S VHF Radio Equipment

JRC have performed in-house testing of the BAM functionality and are awaiting verification from by a third
party, TÜV SÜD Product Service test laboratory. Due to a large number of manufacturers requiring this
service there is a delay in processing the testing and certification which has now caused this to be taking
place after the implementation date for these requirements of 29th August 2021 as defined within
(EU)2021/1158.

Yours sincerely

Michelle Hardy
