1.0 INTRODUCTION:

1.1 An emergency department or, emergency room (ER) is a medical treatment facility
specializing in acute care of patients who present without prior appointment, either by their
own means or by ambulance. The standards ensure high-quality care is provided for all
patients present in the ER.

2.0 STANDARD OF NURSING CARE:

2.1. To maintain a state of professional readiness for all types of emergencies.


2.2. Identify and communicate the safety and work together to mitigate potential risks.
2.3. To plan and practice how to handle emergencies.
2.4. Providing age-appropriate and culturally and ethnically sensitive care.
2.5. ER nurse will coordinate the care across settings and among caregivers.
2.6. ER nurse is able to communicate risks and actions taken clearly and accurately to patients
and concerned others.
2.7. Identify and manage the expected stress/anxiety associated with emergency events, making
referrals for patients who need inpatient care for another facility with fully equipped
ambulance services.
2.8. Use reliable information sources (e.g., infection control department, state or local public
health agency, Center for Disease Control and Prevention) for current referral and
Management guidelines
2.9. Triage the patients accordingly to the priority of cases.
2.10. Extreme conditions may arise with or without warning, due to weather, geology, utility
failure, industrial explosion, or transportation crash. The proper response of the nursing
team may make the difference in the degree of suffering in the community, and in the rate at
which recovery occurs.
