Q.1 Why does the fruit fall from the branches of trees ?
ANS - Strong winds slake the branches of a tree, laden with fruits, vigorously. As a result,
branches come in motion but fruits try to remain at rest due to inertia of rest and hence get
detached from the tree and fall off.

Q.2 An athlete runs some distance before taking a long jump, because:
ANS - Because it helps in jumping higher and longer because of inertia of motion gained due
to the motion.
When the athletes Jump, they already have a forward motion that would be greater than
that of a jump made from standing in one spot.

Q.3 A bullet fired against a glass window pane make a hole in it and the glass pane does not
crack, while a stone striking the same glass pane will smash it.
ANS - When a bullet strikes a window pane, only the part of the window pane which is
struck by the bullet comes in motion while the rest of window pane remains at rest due to
inertia of rest. While in the case of the stone the whole glass window comes in motion, thus
smashing it.
Q.4 Dust can be removed from a carpet by shaking it or by beating it with a stick
ANS - When a carpet is beaten with a stick, then it comes in motion. But the dust particles
try to resist a change in their state of rest. According to Newton's first law of motion, the
dust particles stay in a state of rest, while the carpet moves. Hence, the dust particle comes
out of the carpet due to inertia.

Q.5 The mud from the wheel of a moving vehicle flies off tangentially.
ANS - When mud loses contact with the wheel, there is no external force on the mud.Hence
mud travels straight line path and flies in direction of velocity at that point tangential to the
wheel.

UNIFORM CIRCULAR MOTION

The movement of a body following a circular path is called a circular mo-

tion. Now, the motion of a body moving with constant speed along a circu-
lar path is called Uniform Circular Motion. Here, the speed is constant but
the velocity changes.

If a particle is moving in a circle, it must have some acceleration acting to-

wards the centre which is making it move around the centre. Since this ac-
celeration is perpendicular to the velocity of a particle at every instant, it is
only changing the direction of velocity and not magnitude and that’s why
the motion is uniform circular motion. We call this acceleration
