ACTIVITY 2.

1 INERTIA IN ORDINARY SITUATION

CN_____ Name ____________________________________ Section_______________ Date______________ INSTRUCTIONS: In each situation below, write a brief explanation. It is better to explain in few words that give a complete idea. 1. A space probe maybe carried by the rocket into outer space. What keeps the probe moving after the rocket no longer pushes it? There are no air particles in the outer space that may give resistance to the motion of the probe. The probe will continue on moving due to its inertia.

2. Consider a ball at rest in the middle of toy wagon. When the wagon is pulled forward, where will the ball roll? Why? The manner of pulling contributes significant effect to the direction of the ball s rolling. A quick pull keeps the ball steady relative to the ground therefore, it will roll backward relative to the wagon. A slower pull allows the friction to act on the ball therefore it may stay where it is relative to the wagon. 3. If youre in a car at rest that gets hit from behind, you can suffer a serious neck injury called whiplash. What does whiplash have to do with Newtons first law? Your body moves with the car due to cars seats force but your head did not. Abrupt bending of head causes whiplash. 4. In terms of Newtons first law, how does a car headrest help to guard against whiplash in rear -end collision? When a car is at rest, all that are in it are also at rest. The law of inertia states that the body will start moving only when a net force like the one provided by the seat of the car on the passenger. Any part of the body that is not applied by a net force will remain at rest.

5. Each bone in the chain of bones forming your spine is separated from its neighbors by disks of elastic tissue. What happens, then, when you jump heavily onto your feet from an elevated position? What does bending of knee have to do with this? Bending provides more time for the force to distribute through the spine so the movement of the body slowly reduce speed before it stops.

6. According to Newtons first law: An object that is moving will continue on moving unless acted upon by external force. When you push a cart, it moves. When you stop pushing, it comes to rest. Does this violate Newtons law of inertia? Defend your answer. Real movements are always subjected by friction that acts as force external to the moving cart. When the pushed cart stops, friction must have act on it. the motion is not a violation of the law of inertia.
