Exercise No.1

“Classification and Identification of Field Crops”

Introduction:

Basically, plants are living things that grows in the earth land or water which has a stem,

leaves, and roots (Collins English Dictionary). It can be found anywhere you go. Plants really

play a vital role to everyone’s life where in they are the one provides our needs such as food

consumption, shelter, clothing as well as medication. As you can observe in our surrounding you

see a lot of variety of plants or crops but they can be classify easily based on its family and also

by its certain purposes. In this activity I will list, classify and identify some crops grown here in

our locality in Barangay Candadam Baybay City, Leyte according to its agronomic classification,

special purpose use, family name, means of propagation, economic use.

Objective:

1. To classify field crops, according to agronomic, special purpose use, family name, means

off propagation and economic use.

2. To identify and differentiate some agronomic and special purpose crops found and grown

in your locality or barangay.

3. To list the scientific name of the common crops grown in the Philippines.

Methodology:

In this exercise using the materials provided such as ballpen, bond paper and notebook

roamed around in the respective barangay, do some surveyed and listing every field crop grown

or cultivated that are found. After gathering the data needed, prepared the things to make a

scientific report. Creating a table and classified the listed crops under the following headings:

local name, agronomic classification, family name, scientific name, economic use, means of

propagation, life span and tied to determine the scientific names of all the listed crops.

There a lot of crops that can be found here in our barangay grown and cultivated but as

shown in the “Table 1. Agronomic classification of field crops” I only list atleast ten crops. I’ve

got two cereal crops the rice and corn, mungbean and peanut for leguminous crops and taro and
sweet potato for root crops and crop for every tuber crop, sugar crop, fiber crop, miscellaneous

crops. The farmer planted this crop in the reason that this crop only has the capability to grow

and survive in that field. Also, they grown this such oh crops not only for their own food

consumption but also a food consumption for everyone through selling it that also gave you an

additional income.

As shown in the “Table 2. Specific classification of field crops” you can see that some of the

crop are being grown by the farmer for food but this list of crops has also special purposes or use. One

Catch Crop which is the pechay where in its special purpose is to Utilize residual resources. Three Cover

Crops the mungbean, peanut and sweet potato where in it use as a Soil cover, prevent soil erosion and

weeds control. One Green Manure Crops use for organic fertilizer and also one stimulant crop which use

for herbal medication. Also, two fiber crops use for textiles and clothing. Lastly, one for Companion

Crop and Miscellaneous Crops for maximum production and other purposes like biofuel and many more.
Answer to question

1. Can you classify the different crops from horticulture crops? Do you know the scientific

name of agronomic and special purpose crops commonly grown by farmers in the

Philippines?

 Yes, I can classify the different crops from horticulture crops and also know

some scientific name of agronomic and special purpose crops commonly grown

by farmers in the Philippines by reviewing the topics of what our instructor(s), by

also researching, observing and inquire to an expert which is are the farmers.

Conclusion:

As a conclusion, we must know and classify every crop in specially to its purposes or use

order for us to determined what crops should we use for the certain activity. Through the help of

this Laboratory Report our knowledge will be added. Also, this will guide us if we are planning

to cultivate some crops.
