History
TikTok, launched in 2016 as Douyin in China,
expanded globally following ByteDance's 2017
acquisition of Musical.ly. The merger boosted its
popularity, especially among young people,
thanks to its personalized recommendation
algorithm. TikTok has become a global cultural
phenomenon, redefining digital creativity with
viral challenges and diverse content. Despite its
success, it faces criticism over privacy and
content moderation.
Creator
The creator of TikTok is Zhang Yiming, who founded
the company ByteDance in 2012. Zhang Yiming
created TikTok with the vision of offering a social
media platform focused on short, easy-to-consume
videos, with a focus on creativity and interaction
between users. The main idea was to provide an
entertainment platform that allows people to share
and discover content quickly and fun.
Functions
The main functions of TikTok are:

1. **Create and share videos:** Users can record and edit short videos, adding
music, special effects, filters and texts before sharing them.

2. **Discover content:** TikTok employs a personalized recommendation

algorithm to display relevant content based on users' interests and viewing
behaviors.

3. **Social Interaction:** Users can follow, like, comment and share videos,
which encourages interaction and community building on the platform.

4. **Trends and Challenges:** TikTok promotes viral challenges and trends

where users can participate in dancing, comedy, lip-syncing, and more,
spurring creativity and community engagement.
Opinion
TikTok has transformed online content creation and consumption with
its creative diversity and recommendation algorithm. Although it
offers innovative entertainment, its addiction can distract from other
activities. Concerns about privacy and data security are valid,
highlighting the importance of using the app with awareness and
balance.
