important questions about its societal implications.

impacts on society.

experiences. This exposure to diverse cultures fosters empathy, understanding, and appreciation for
different communities.

products and services. Many small businesses have gained visibility and reached new customers
through creative and engaging TikTok videos. The platform's algorithmic recommendations also
make it easier for users to discover and support local businesses.

important issues and mobilize for change. From raising awareness about social justice causes to
promoting environmental sustainability, TikTok serves as a platform for activism, giving marginalized
voices a chance to be heard.

Negative Impacts of TikTok on Society

1. Cyberbullying and Online Harassment:

Like other social media platforms, TikTok is not immune to instances of cyberbullying and online
harassment. Users can face abusive comments, face derogatory comments, body shaming, malicious
trends targeting individuals, scams, fake accounts or even stalking. Cyberbullying can be extremely
damaging to the mental health of victims. Even a single hate comment is enough to morally degrade
a person’s self-esteem. Depression, anxiety, anger, isolation, and extreme stress are all effects of
cyberbullying.

- An article published by The New Indian Express (2019) announce that in December alone 36
calls from children and adults was received by the counsellor of Tamil Nadu at the 104 helplines
regarding TikTok bullying, harassment and addiction. A 23- year- old who committed suicide in
Vyasarpadi in Tamil Nadu, he took the dangerous step after he was teased online for dressing
up like a woman and posted on TikTok

2. Potential for Misinformation:

Like other social media platforms, TikTok faces challenges regarding the spread of misinformation.
Due to its algorithmic nature, false or misleading content can quickly gain traction, potentially
influencing public opinion on various topics. This aspect raises concerns regarding the platform's
responsibility in combatting misinformation. With an open platform that allows nearly anyone to
produce and publish content, it can be expected that not everything put out on TikTok is credible.

3. Pornographic & Inappropriate Content :

This is a big negative impact of TikTok, especially for younger users. As of recent reports, it is
estimated that roughly 32.5% of TikTok users are between the ages of 10 and 19. In the grand
scheme, those are some young consumers including the minors and teenagers. The reality is, TikTok
contains some content that is inappropriate, especially for people of that age range.

- Children are vulnerable and might get uncovered to sexual predators and pedophiles. TikTok is
a dangerous app to young kids as it permits people to easily “gather information” about users
from their videos. Most targeted audience in this app are school students who are often seen in
school uniforms posting videos of themselves in classrooms which give an opportunity to
stalkers to guess which school they go to.

4. Addiction & Decreased Productivity:

The addictive nature of TikTok's content can lead to excessive screen time and distraction from real-
life activities. Users may find themselves spending hours scrolling through videos, leading to
procrastination, neglect of responsibilities, and potential negative impacts on mental health.

- In 2019 India alone has obtained 88.6 million TikTok users regardless of the inappropriate
content it holds. Youngsters who are getting addicted to TikTok or other similar apps, their
future is in danger and because of this the mindset of the young children are ruined.

5. Graphic Violence:

The presence of graphic violence on TikTok has a detrimental impact on users and the wider
community. Exposure to violent content can desensitize individuals to real-life violence, potentially
leading to increased anxiety and distress. Moreover, the normalization and glorification of violent
acts can erode empathy and compassion, influencing real-world behavior. Ultimately, the negative
impact of graphic violence on TikTok extends to the well-being of users and society as a whole

6. Racism:

There has been quite a bit of talk about the unfair and unequal censorship on the TikTok app.
Whether it be in regard to race, body shape, gender, age, sexuality, or more, there have been claims
of unjust censorship banning certain groups of creators more than others. Creators are being body
shamed because of their height, weight, color, disabilities and even if one wears spectacles, they get
trolled, racist comments about their look and they are not even appreciated for their creative skills.

In conclusion, TikTok has undeniably made a significant impact on society. It has revolutionized the
way we create and consume content, fostering creativity, community, and knowledge sharing. Its
influence on the society encompasses both positive and negative aspects. While it has provided a
platform for creativity, self-expression, and community building, it also poses challenges related to
harmful trends, and unrealistic beauty standards. These positive and negative influences are not
exclusive to TikTok and can be observed in varying degrees across other communication apps on
social media platforms. However, it is essential to address the platform's negative aspects, such as
cyberbullying and privacy concerns, to ensure a safer and healthier online environment. As users,
we must navigate TikTok mindfully and responsibly, harnessing its positive aspects while being
aware of its potential pitfalls.
