(B1) Introduction 1.1:
What is Mechatronics?
• Mechatronics term was invented in 1969 by a Japanese engineer.
• It combines:
• Mecha for mechanisms.
• Tronics for electronics.
• For design and manufacturing purposes, it integrates mechanical
engineering with electronics and intelligent computer control.
• Why mechatronics?
• Great flexibility,
• Easy redesign and reprogramming, and
• Automated data collection and reporting.

(B1) Introduction 1.1:
What is Mechatronics?
• Mechatronics is a complete integration of electrical, mechanical, and control
systems in which there is a concurrent approach to design.
• It is an interdisciplinary approach to the engineering design of (examples):
• Cars, Robots, Machine tools, Washing machines, cameras, etc.
• This design approach should be initially decided if the system to be developed is
cheaper, more reliable, and flexible.
• The approach is concurrent and not sequential.
• It connects areas of technology listed below along with the analysis of the
behavior of the systems and control systems:
• Sensors and measurement systems,
• Drive and actuation systems, and
• Microprocessor systems.
