The 21st Century Architectural
Metamorphosis: The Emergence of
Architecture as a Verb
"Architecture as a Verb" refers to a design process that is active,
collaborative, and responsive. It goes beyond the conventional idea of
static structures and emphasizes the transformational power of
architecture.
The architecture of the 21st century must possess qualities of
dynamism, cooperation, and adaptability for several convincing
justifications. It requires moving away from fixed and self-centered
ways of thinking, questioning conventional ideas about architecture as
a noun, and adopting design approaches that prioritize values and
cultural understanding. Examining the "Bilbao Effect" highlights the
significance of shifting away from architectural designs that prioritize
grandeur over cultural relevance.
By actively participating in social and political movements through
public interest design, democratic design, and tactical urbanism, it
emphasizes the importance of connecting architecture to local priorities
and community issues. In addition, the significance of a comprehensive
and socially aware design process is highlighted by valuing-based
procedures, design thinking, and transformative urban design, as
demonstrated by Nada Maani's research. Finally, it is essential to
embrace heterogeneity and pluralism, as it aligns with a late 20th-
century trend of valuing varied cultural manifestations in urban
environments. To summarize, the architecture of the 21st century
should possess qualities such as adaptability, cooperation, and
receptiveness to question conventional models. It should also aim to
tackle societal problems, foster inclusivity, and cultivate culturally
diverse spaces.
