Assignment 01 Submission date: 05-02-2023

1. Derive a relation for aspiration effect in the sprue and discuss the shape modification of the sprue.
2. A job shown in Figure is to be made from steel by casting process. The mold for this job is made from
a wooden pattern. Determine the dimensions of the wooden pattern assuming machining allowance of 3
mm on each side, shaking allowance of 1 mm on length and width, and a shrinkage allowance of 3%.

Note: Height of the mould does not require any shake allowance.

3. Discuss the role of the chills, chaplets, padding, and riser.

4. Discuss in detail about various types of pattern.
5. Discuss the effects of friction and velocity distribution on cavity filling time and also derive the
numerical expression for the same.
6. A mould along with the riser is shown in Figure for the casting of the plate 20 cm*20 cm* 5 cm.
Determine the area Ag such that mould and riser get filled within 10 sec after the down sprue has been
filled. Neglect the friction loss.

7. The volume of a cube of side ‘L’ and the volume of a sphere of radius ‘r’ are equal. Both the cube and
the sphere are solid and of the same material. They are a big cast. Calculate the ratio of the
solidification time of the cube to the same of the sphere.
8. Design the down sprue to avoid the aspiration effect (Fig.) to deliver the liquid cast iron (density-7800
kg/m3) at the rate of 10 kg/sec against no head at the base of the sprue. Neglect the friction and orifice
effects.
9. Solve problem 8 by considering the effect of friction and velocity distribution. The liquied being
poured is molten Fe with the properties: density-7800 kg/mm3, kinetic viscosity-0.00496Kg/m-s. For
the 90o turn at the end of the sprue, (L/D)eq=25, ef-0.45.
10. For the given cast iron casting, calculate the chock area.

Given density of the material: 7.86*10-6 kg/mm3, density of the liquid metal: 6.90*10-6 kg/mm3, Efficiency
factor (C) =0.73
