1. a) What are the general considerations in machine design. 5

b) Discuss the factors governing the selection of material to design machine component. 5

c) Design a knuckle joint to transmit 100 kN. The design stresses may be taken as 75 MPa in 10
tension, 60 MPa in shear and 150 MPa in compression.

2. a) Explain in details classification of machine design. 5

b) Give the general procedure used for designing machine elements. 5

c) Design socket type cotter joint used to resist a load of 60 kN safely which acts along the 10

4. a) A flat cast iron cylinder head 25 mm thick is fastened to the flange of 250 mm cast iron 16
cylinder by means of bolts assuming for cast iron an allowable stress of 30 MPa.
Determine
i) Pressure that can be carried by the cylinder.
ii) Thickness of cylinder wall and of the cylinder flange.
iii) No. and size of bolts to fasten the head
iv) Outside diameter of head.

b) What are the different stresses induced in pressure vessel ? 4

5. A shaft is supported by bearings 1200 mm a part, left gear B has 40 teeths and 10 mm 20
module. It is located 200 mm left to the right hand bearing and is driven by gear A directly
below it. A belt pulley C, 600 mm in diameter is located 400 mm to the right to left hand
bearing and drives another bigger pulley directly behind it. The ratio of tentions is 2.5:1
with tight side on top. The angle of wrap on pulley C is 150º. The gear teeth are 20º involute
form. The gear transmit 40 kw at 250 rpm, determine diameter of shaft.

6. a) A railway Wagon weighing 18 kN and moving at velocity of 60 m/min, is brought to rest
by a bumber consisting of two helical springs of square section. In bringing the wagon to
rest the springs are to be compressed by 200 mm. The permissible shear stress is not to
exceed 400 N/mm2. Select spring index of '6' and find -
i) maximum load on each spring
ii) Side of square section wire
iii) Mean dia. of the coils.
iv) No. of active coil
Take G = 84 x 105 N/mm2.

b) A semi-elliptical leaf spring used for automobile suspension consists of three extra full
length leaves and is graduated length including the master leaf. The center to center distance
between two eye of spring is 1 m. The maximum force that acts on the spring is 75 kN. The
ratio of (b/t) for each leaf is 9. The leaves are pre-stressed so that the maximum stress
induced is 450 MPa. E = 207 x 103 MPa. Determine -
